Synopsis

Two thousand years ago Turin's Porta Palazzo was the Roman gate where those who weren't allowed in would hang around finding expedients to survive. Today immigrants from five continents are stuck in a modern version of this limbo.

In this enormous market they find work and a temporary home; while struggling to obtain elusive “papers” that will open the gate to Europe.

To some integration is a necessary process for immigrants to understand western culture and values and eventually find their place in European society, to others this word means loss of identity and cultural flattening: they feel that an immigrant must “become Italian” and abandon their language, traditions and religion to be accepted.
