Hemal is an award winning documentary film editor and producer. She has worked in various capacities for PBS – POV, PBS – WGBH-Nova, Discovery Kids and BBC. She recently finished editing 'When the Drum is Beating,' an ITVS funded documentary by Peabody award winning filmmaker Whitney Dow. She edited Flying on One Engine, which premiered at SXSW, Best of the year IDFA, Full Frame. The film was broadcast on television in Germany, Sweden, Poland, Estonia, and Israel. She was also an editor on Laughter, India's laughter clubs, produced by White Buffalo Entertainment and acquired by BBC; Diamond Vehicle, on a Tibetan mystic Lama Norlha, by Uniondocs founder Christopher Allen, the film featured in IFW.
She is currently producing 'My Vision For Pakistan.' The documentary looks at role of modern education in nation building in Pakistan. She is also producing Diksha, the documentary witnesses the relationship between a 76-year-old naked Jain mystic and his 26-year-old student.
Hemal has an MFA in documentary films from the Documentary Institute of the University of Florida. Her thesis film Tell Me a Story featured in various film festivals and was shown in arts in medicine and oral history conferences as well in medical schools and healthcare facilities. The film witnesses an unusual friendship between a Jewish oral historian Barbara and her depression patient Merium, a famous Japanese nuclear physicist.
Born and raised in Mumbai, India, Hemal speaks five Indian languages. Prior to making a switch to documentary films, Hemal pursued careers as diverse as Index fund manager at India's largest mutual fund to a microbiologist in a pathological lab.
