Jan Selby is an EMMY© award-winning independent director and producer of documentary films and owner of Quiet Island Films (www.quietislandfilms.com), a Minnesota-based video production company doing work throughout the United States.

Jan’s first film, A Circle and Three Lines (www.acircleandthreelines.com) (2009), is a short documentary about the history of the ubiquitous peace symbol, tracing it’s roots from a nuclear disarmament march in England to being a global commercial icon today.

Many moons ago, when Jan was in college at Tufts University, she aspired to becoming a documentary filmmaker. After majoring in philosophy, she ended up pursuing a more practical career in marketing, working in corporate environments for clients worldwide such as Apple Computer and Boston Scientific.

In 2006, Jan was thrilled to jump off the corporate ship to apply her skills to a new career in production and filmmaking. Partnering with award-winning documentary filmmaker Melody Gilbert, Jan produced numerous “mini-docs” for corporate and nonprofit clients, as well as the feature-length documentary FRITZ: The Walter Mondale Story (www.mondalefilm.org).

In 2009, Jan founded Quiet Island Films. In addition to producing work for commercial clients and creative agencies, Jan currently has two films in production. Shooting has recently been completed for 9 Pieces of Peace (www.9piecesfilm.com), a feature-length documentary about how conflict over a graffiti peace symbol divided a community for decades. In early pre-production, Building The Pink Tower will look at education reform through the lens of Montessori education.

Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Jan now resides in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Jan is a member of IFP Minnesota Center for Media Arts, Minnesota Women in Film and Television, The D-Word, and Minnesota Women in Marketing and Communications.
