DocuClub in November!

Our November DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, November 16, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker).

This month, we will screen a rough cut of Brasslands by the Meerkat Media Collective. Once a year, a tiny Serbian village explodes with brass cacophony and riotous celebration as half a million fans descend upon Guča, the world’s largest trumpet competition. On the 50th anniversary of the festival, an unlikely American brass band undertakes a journey to the source of their inspiration, barely a decade after NATO bombs rocked Belgrade. The citizens of Guča prepare for the oncoming hordes with a mix of national pride and nervous energy. The older generation has lived through world war, socialist rule, national fragmentation, and ethnic cleansing – all of which has given way to a festival at the center of a evolving national identity. Middle-aged business owners hope to capitalize on a growing festival and huge influx of cash. The youngest watch the best trumpeters in the world play their country’s traditional music; some yearn to play on that stage, while others throw on their headphones to pump Metallica and Lady Gaga. Brasslands explores the moment when cultural appropriation confronts its origin – in this war-scarred landscape, disparate societies find common ground in a joyous, deeply transcendent music that leaves no ear unaffected. Meerkat Media Collective is a self-organized community of media makers committed to creating innovative and thought-provoking films through shared authorship. Since 2005, they have produced and distributed over twenty short films and two features. Their first feature documentary, Stages (2010), won Best Documentary and Audience Award at the HBO New York International Latino Film Festival. Work of the production team of more than fifteen meerkats behind Brasslands has been broadcast on PBS, HBO, The Discovery Channel, ESPN, MTV and Arté; streamed online via Time Magazine and The Onion News Network; and featured at festivals internationally, including Cannes, Silverdocs, Nashville Film Festival, Media that Matters, Locarno Film Festival and Sheffield Doc Fest. Our moderator will be filmmaker Kelly Anderson. She is an award-winning independent producer and director of documentary and narrative films. Her most recent production is Never Enough, a documentary about American’s relationship with their material possessions, which won an Artistic Excellence award at the 2010 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Other recent directing work includes Someplace Like Home, a documentary about the redevelopment of Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn, which she made for FUREE (Families United for Racial and Economic Equality). In 2004, Anderson produced and directed (with Tami Gold) and edited Every Mother's Son, a documentary for ITVS about mothers whose children have been killed by police officers and who have become national spokespeople on the issue of police brutality. Every Mother's Son premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and had its broadcast premiere on PBS’s P.O.V. series. Gold and Anderson also made Making a Killing, a half-hour documentary that addresses the marketing practices of the tobacco industry in the developing world. Making a Killing premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, was screened for delegates at the World Health Organization and aired on television in Nigeria, Serbia, Lagos and Vietnam. In 2000, Anderson completed Shift, a one-hour drama for ITVS about the volatile relationship between a North Carolina waitress and a telemarketing prison inmate, which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and aired on many PBS stations. Her other documentaries include Out at Work (with Tami Gold), which was screened at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and was shown on HBO. Screening of Hidden Battles with Director Victoria Mills
How does killing change the person who pulls the trigger? Hidden Battles is a dramatic and deeply personal documentary film about the psychological impact of war on five soldiers. Representing a cross-section of nationalities, gender, class and race, these soldiers unveil intimate memories about the central act of combat — killing another human being — and how they create a life for themselves afterward.

Victoria Mills is an award winning documentary filmmaker as well as a full-time practicing psychoanalyst. In conjunction with the films, she leads workshops with universities, national women's organizations, and grassroots community groups. As an analyst with 25 years experience, Victoria has worked extensively with people of different cultures who have experienced trauma, including those who suffered from 9/11. She is also is a training analyst and on the faculty of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, and supervises graduate and PhD students at several universities.

Jennifer Karady is an artist whom has worked with American veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the past four years to create staged narrative photographs that depict their individual stories and address their difficulties in adjusting to civilian life. After an extensive interview process with the veteran and his/her family, Karady collaborates with the veteran to restage a chosen moment from war within the safe space of their everyday environment, often surrounded by family and friends.

Helen Benedict's sixth novel, Sand Queen, is culled from real life stories of female soldiers and Iraqis, offering a story of love, courage and struggle from the rare perspective of two young women on opposite sides of a war. Benedict has won three major awards for her work on soldiers: The 2010 Exceptional Merit in Media Award from the National Women’s Political Caucus, The Ken Book Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness for 2010, and the 2008 James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. She has testified twice to Congress on behalf of women in the military. She is a professor of journalism at Columbia University.

Scott Thompson is the Director of Social Dialogue and Training Initiatives for Intersections International, a New York based NGO that works at the intersection of communities in conflict. His expertise is in programming for returning military persons and civilians, utilizing psychological healing processes to help heal the rift between these groups. He oversees Intersections’ Veteran-Civilian Dialogue project, a community building effort for returning soldiers to provide meaningful tools of reconciliation and healing.

We hope you will join us in watching a documentary work-in-progress by a local filmmaker and then participating in a post-screening constructive critique session to help her get a reality check on her story structure and character development and be able to move forward with the editing process.
These screenings are open to the general public. You do not need to be a documentary filmmaker to attend. This program is organized by Docs In Progress and sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George Washington University.

Buzos (“trash divers”) in the Dominican Republic struggle to maintain a normal life even as they live off a smoking garbage dump in the outskirts of the city. For the pennies they scrape together each day the buzos risk injury, infection, food poisoning, violence and continuing a cycle of illiteracy, malnutrition, and being considered little more than pariahs to local government officials.

The office is clean and large with wood floors, high ceilings, great natural light and central air conditioning/heat. The building is safe and quiet with lots of friendly, creative neighbors on the floor: filmmakers, photographers, etc. Great location, a few blocks from either the 7th Avenue or 15th Street/Prospect Park F stops and lots of great bodegas, cafes, Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc.

Space is available December 1st for short or long term rental. The ideal candidate is someone who works independently or creatively and is not on the phone all day. You'd get a large work space that includes wireless internet, refrigerator and espresso/coffee machine. There is currently an oversized desk, chair and shelves for your use or you can bring your own.

Rent is somewhat negotiable, between $250-300, depending on your work schedule so please let me know what kind of work you do and your typical work week--if you have one. Photos upon request.

I'm looking for someone who could lend/rent me a camera, tripod and mic for one day in Cleveland on Thursday. I will be travelling there to hold a guest lecture on the invitation of Prof Daniel Goulding, whose book The Yugoslav Experience on Yugoslav cinema, was a great inspiration to me in making Cinema Komunisto. I was thinking of using the opportunity of my visit to shoot a brief interview with Prof Goulding for the Cinema Komunisto website and would be very grateful if there's anyone in the Cleveland area who could help me find a (very basic) camera to do this. I can offer tickets for the screening of Cinema Komunisto at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Wednesday evening in return.
