World's Festival capital, Edinburgh, may be interested in a new
Masters degree in Screen Project Development, hosted at the Scottish
city's Napier University. Geared towards producers it covers story
development, financing, working relationships and, crucially,
encourages participants to develop a project(s) during the one year
full-time or two years part time programme. Convened by documentary
producer Robin MacPherson (that's me) we hope to offer some of the
modules online from 2005, meantime you can get all the details at
completed everything letter of intention to film treatment with
master scenes as well as a detaileld shooting script. It's gonna
involve part narrative (on 35mm) and the bigger chunk, the actual
documentary, (on HD).
I'm up for a grant but I know that a budget breakdown would
strengthen my proposal.
My question is can anyone assist me in a list of all elements that
you might think I should include in my breadown as small as they may
seem- minimum crew requirements, equipment, other logistics. My only
exprience is shootign independent shorts on 16mm.

Media Literacy Violence Prevention Project Internships
Working with NYC High School Students
The Educational Video Center and Satellite Academy High School are
offering internships and independent study classes working with high
school students in the following activities in the Fall 2004 and
possibly the Spring 2005 semesters: video and web page production;
facilitating internet student discussions between school sites;
facilitating classroom discussions and activities related to media
analysis, violence in the media, violence in our society, and
alternatives to violence; facilitating classroom discussions and
responding to the viewing of student media productions.
The Educational Video Center and Satellite Academy High School
Project seek undergraduate and graduate students to do internships
and independent study courses working in NYC high school classes
facilitating high school students with video projects, web page
production, media analysis, critical viewing of each others tapes
and internet bulletin board discussions during the Fall 2004 semester
and possibly the Spring 2005 semester. The project, called the Media
Literacy Violence Prevention Project, explores themes related to
violence, alternatives to violence, media critique, and violence in
the media, and is a collaboration between Satellite Academy High
School, the Educational Video Center and New York Universitys Media
Ecology Program of the Department of Culture and Communication.
High school students at the four different sites of Satellite Academy
High School (one site in the Bronx, one site in Queens, and two sites
in Manhattan) will explore the role of violence in their own lives
and communities as well as alternatives to violence; will learn
to read or critically analyze mainstream media that bombards them
with images and messages twenty-four hours a day; and will critique
the role of violence in the media (i.e. television, movies, music,
video, computer games, video games, etc). Additionally, students
will produce media that promote alternative messages. They will also
communicate with students from other Satellite sites about their
learning and their projects via blackboard, an electronic bulletin
board for internet conversations linked to the projects website.
This is a wonderful opportunity for undergraduate and graduate
students interested in any or all of the following: working with high
school students, teaching media production, media analysis, violence
in the media, facilitating activities and discussions about community
violence and alternatives to violence.

With small digital cameras now accessible to almost everyone, what
skills does the videomaker need to capture engaging, artful, and
technically sound documentary footage? This intensive workshop
teaches the basics of digital cinematography for the documentary,
with emphasis on how each frame must tell the story. Taught by D-word
member, documentary director and DP Cynthia Wade
(www.cynthiawade.com), students learn "hands-on" how to improve
dramatically their video images. Topics include learning to see
cinematically, using natural and added light, when and why to stay
away from automatic settings, special effects with filters/gels and
other fun tricks of the trade, and simple guidelines to follow so
that you will get all the shots you need for editing.
Special attention will be given to the challenge of simultaneously
shooting and directing the documentary, particularly as a one-person
or two-person crew. Students must have their own camcorders, which
they must bring to class.

CRUCIBLE OF WAR tells the personal story of what it's like to live in
a warzone after the war is over and the news cameras and aid workers
have moved on to new hotspots. More information at
We are making a documentary film about costumes and need experienced
filmmakers with their own gear to shoot different events during the 5
days leading up to Halloween (October 31st) in the Chicago area. We
are shooting with an XL1 and PD150 so we would like people with the
same or comparable equipment. At the moment this is a no-budget
feature, but we can offer credit in the film and free costume rentals
at one of Chicagos premiere Costume shops, either for Halloween or
anytime during the year for use in your own film projects.

A national voting rights organization called People for the American
Way has organized an Election Protection program where tens of
thousands of volunteers will be monitoring the polls on Nov 2nd,
Election Day, particularly in the battleground states. They have also
amassed 5,000 volunteer lawyers to work with them.
I am organizing videographers around the country to also work with
them so that any irregularities and illegalities can be documented
for purposes of press conferences, footage for the mainstream media,
possible lawsuits, etc. If there is obvious fraud, there might be
subsequent demonstrations etc.

December that will be featuring two hip hop musicians affiliated with Rhymesayers
Entertainment. I would like to produce a DVD of the documentary once it is finished so I
am trying to find some sort of profit sharing contract that I can sign with the musicians I
am working with to specify who gets what if the doc. ever makes any money. I have
searched through "The Complete Film Production Handbook" as well as a book of
contracts for independent filmmakers and haven't found what I am looking for. I would
draw up the contract myself but I am afraid I might miss something that will bite me later.

SmartSound Software and the International Documentary Association are hosting a Soundtrack Creation Workshop and Screening on Dec. 7 at Culver Studios in Culver City. I would like to encourage anyone interested in learning how to maximize their scoring budget while getting the highest-quality result possible to attend this event.
At this unique soundtrack creation workshop, independent and documentary filmmakers will learn the latest tips and tricks to create professional-quality soundtracks for projects of any budget. Filmmaker Rick McKay will share the secrets he used to score his award-winning documentary *Broadway: The Golden Age,* including how he used SmartSound technology and music to score almost a third of his movie for about $500. A screening of the movie and an open Q&A session with McKay will follow the workshop.
Creating a professional-quality soundtrack is a growing concern for independent and documentary filmmakers and editors. Frequent time and budget constraints make it very difficult to score projects to a level that meets their standards. This event will show filmmakers new ways to effectively score their scenes.

I am working on in NYC? It is a true story about strangers who meet
at Bryant Park around a sign that says "Talk To Me". The documentary
is about more than talking when a few of the strangers are moved by
the conversation that they act on their impulse to act on behalf of
one person's struggle... and the general dilemma we all face when we
see suffering and whether or not we can make a difference? going
into too much detail, the story focuses on the decisions and
relationships that ensue. It has been featured in the New York
Daily News and on the Oprah Show, CNN, New York Times, and different
variations of the story in so much media around the world.
I have a lot of great material to edit. I happen to know how to
edit on the Avid, so I am doing it a lot myself. But I need a co-

The latest of short videos produced in and about East Austin by this University of Texas film class screens next Wednesday night. Meet Pearl Pease. Doing hair is not just a job, it is an essential part of life for the customers at the House of Elegance. Some have been clients for over twenty years.
