Rising Up: The Alams by Konrad Aderer, 11 minutes
See how a Bangladeshi-American family targeted by Special Registration fights back. As part of the Homeland security measures, immigrant men from 25, mostly Muslim countries were required to enroll in a Special Registration program. The result: no evidence of terror, but some 13,000 people are now being deported mostly for expired visas. The Alams were among the many families who believed that voluntarily participating in the Special Registration would show their loyalty. Instead, they face the prospect of breaking up their family, despite a decade of hard work and the raising of two children. Working with DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), the Queens South Asian activist group, the Alams have become activists, organizing to fight for their right to stay. Part of the Call for Change series.

Two Months to Home by Janice Ahn, 8 minutes
In the months prior to 9-11, an Afghan woman named Samira Rahman narrowly escapes from the Taliban, losing her family. After settling down in Long Island and beginning a new one, Samira is taken away by Homeland Security agents in the middle of the night. Her husband Abdul, who runs a coffee cart in South Ferry, and their two young boys await news of her fate.

Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity by Kevin Lee, 12 min
A restaurant owner beaten. A policeman fired. A 20 year subway conductor born in the U.S., threatened with job loss: All for wearing the signature turbans of their religion, Sikhism. Since 9/11, hate crimes and job losses have plagued the Sikh-American community, whose religion originated in India, and is not even Islamic. In response, the NYC Sikh community has organized to confront the bias and attacks, through legal suits, pressure on city officials and proactive public education. An excellent introduction to an often misunderstood religion and the success of community activism. Part of the Call for Change series.

December 7/September 11 by Ann Brandman & Paul Nishijima, 15 minutes
A comparison of how the events and possible after effects of September 11th may mirror those of the attack on Pearl Harbor. A collection of interviews with Japanese-American veterans who witnessed the events of December 7 in Hawaii offer their insight into what has happened and what might be to come. Join Japanese American filmmaker Konrad Aderer to a sneak preview of his upcoming documentary film Enemy Alien.

Enemy Alien, a first-person documentary, is the gripping story of the fight to free Farouk Abdel-Muhti, a gentle but indomitable Palestinian-born human rights activist detained in a post-9/11 sweep of Muslim immigrants. Told through the eyes of the filmmaker, the grandson of Japanese Americans interned during World War II, this documentary takes on unprecedented intimacy and historical resonance.

As the filmmaker confronts his own family legacy of incarceration, his involvement in the current struggle deepens. Resistance brings consequences: In retaliation for organizing a massive protest from inside detention, Farouk is beaten and locked in solitary confinement, and his American-born son Tarek is arrested in a counterterrorism investigation into the documentary itself.

My name is Jeff Dreyer. I'm a father of a Special Needs 22 yr old child. I'm so very tired of hearing the derogatory, demeaning and hurtful word "retard" being used so rampantly these days. I made an 18 minute documentary titled "it's Just Not Funny". The premise is to get the entertainment industry to take the word "retard" out of their scripts. The video was on YouTube for nine days only. It had almost 600 views though. I had over 30 wonderful comments on YouTube, and I received from across the country another 100 positive messages on my Face Book page and my e-mail.
Here's the issue. The Special Olympics Southern Cal. made me take it down, because they said some of my content is negative towards the entertainment industry. That's the idea. Someone has to step up an speak out against the offenders that perpetuate this use. It's everywhere these days. TV, movies, talk shows, interviews et cetera. The person that edited it for me isn't interested in continuing with my project. I need someone to help me take the SOSC logo out of some of the footage, and remove their name from the credits. I then want to enter the documentary in some film festivals. If the right person with some horse power in the business viewed it, and they have a Special Needs child, sibling, relative or friend, the doc would catch fire. Then possibly we can make the doc larger and get some results. Anyone that would like to volunteer about five hours would certainly be included in the credits. I live in S. Orange County Cal. This month, we will screen a rough cut of Quel Souvenir by Danya Abt. In 2003, construction was completed on a pipeline that stretches a thousand kilometers from the oil fields of Chad to the beaches of Cameroon. Funded by oil giants Exxon, Chevron and Petronas, and politically insured by the World Bank, the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline was a beacon of hope to the Chadian and Cameroonian people. It promised to spread prosperity and opportunity through some of the poorest communities in the world. *Quel Souvenir* follows the path of the Chad-Cameroon pipeline to witness its lasting effects, featuring the compelling individuals who live along its path. From the fishing ports of Kribi to oil installations of Doba, the stunning diversity of the landscape through which the pipeline passes reflects the many different Africans who live with it daily. Despite their differences, the communities along the pipeline speak with one voice to ask “If the land is so rich, why are we so poor?” As the world looks increasingly to Sub-Saharan African to satisfy its thirst for oil, this timely film asks what is the human cost of this extraction, and how oil effects the struggle for survival, the fight for democracy and the dream of peace. Director/Producer Danya Abt’s desire to use film to create a more just and peaceful world has driven her from her native Detroit to the bayous of Louisiana and as far as the deserts of Central Africa. Her films have been featured at the MoMa in New York, the Detroit Institute of the Arts and a variety of community gathering places to generate dialogue and inspire social change. Most recently, Abt served as Senior Video Producer for GRITtv with Laura Flanders. Her work will be included as part of PBS syndication in the fall.

Our moderator will be Chi-hui Yang, a film programmer, lecturer and writer based in New York. As a guest curator, Yang has presented film and video series at film festivals and events internationally, including the 2011 MOMA Documentary Fortnight, 2008 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar (“The Age of Migration”), Seattle International Film Festival, Washington D.C. International Film Festival and Barcelona Asian Film Festival. From 2000-2010, he was the Director and Programmer of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, the largest showcase of its kind in the U.S. Yang is also the programmer of “Cinema Asian America,” a new On-Demand service offered by Comcast and currently a Visiting Scholar at NYU’s Center for Media, Culture and History.

I worked for Filmmaker Magazine, and have a lot of experience in transcribing interviews that ran anywhere from 10 minutes to nearly two hours. "Documentary Film Legacy on Reality TV"
This salon series brings together filmmakers and documentary film aficionados to discuss and debate great issues in documentary cinema. Each salon will focus around a particular sub-genre of documentary and use clips from documentary films and questions from the moderator to spur reflection and discussion. This salon's topic will focus on how documentary has influenced and is influenced by "reality" television. Now an almost default setting for mainstream entertainment, Reality TV emerged in the early 1970s as a highly experimental and controversial mode of documentary expression. This salon focuses on Reality TV’s intersections with different trends in documentary filmmaking, how the mode has shifted over the past four decades, and its current place in the broadcast industry. Groundbreaking programs such as PBS’s An American Family (1973) will be central to the discussion. We are pleased to welcome guest facilitator, Josh Glick. He is a PhD candidate at Yale University in the departments of Film Studies and American Studies. His research and teaching interests are focused on the history and theory of American documentary film, Hollywood, and race and representation in popular media.

Now in its seventh year, the Docs In Progress work-in-progress screenings provide an opportunity for local and visiting documentary filmmakers to screen their rough cuts to a general audience and get valuable feedback. Facilitators from Docs In Progress moderate a feedback session with the audience after the screening. This honest and constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing the film. The next film to be screened is Beth Murphy's The List. The film follows Kirk Johnson who, after leading reconstruction teams for the U.S. government in Iraq, returns home only to discover that his Iraqi friends and colleagues are being killed, kidnapped or forced into exile by radical militias... all because they worked for the United States trying to help rebuild their country. Stunned by fear-mongering and stagnating bureaucracy that prevents these Iraqis from being rescued, Kirk begins compiling a list of these allies and, one by one, helps them find refuge and a new life in America.

La mission de lʼorganisation :
La 7e édition de Doc Circuit Montréal (DCM), le marché québécois du documentaire, se tiendra
du 14 au 16 novembre prochain dans le cadre des Rencontres internationales du documentaire
de Montréal (RIDM). Doc Circuit Montréal vise à stimuler la production et la diffusion nationale et
internationale de documentaires indépendants, en favorisant notamment lʼéchange
dʼinformations et les rencontres entre les différents acteurs du secteur du documentaire. Tables
rondes, conférences et ateliers autour dʼenjeux actuels majeurs réuniront pendant trois jours
plus de 300 réalisateurs, producteurs, télédiffuseurs et distributeurs.
Festival international de cinéma documentaire, les RIDM en seront à leur 14e édition en
novembre prochain. Pour l'occasion, une centaine dʼoeuvres documentaires inédites provenant
des quatre coins de la planète seront présentées. De nombreux échanges avec les cinéastes
invités, tables rondes, ateliers et débats jalonneront les douze jours de l'événement.
Description du poste
Principales tâches à accomplir :
• Assister à la coordination, à la rédaction et au suivi du contenu des documents
d'information sur les activités de Doc Circuit Montréal (communiqués de presse,
catalogue, infolettres et site Web) en français et en anglais;
• Participer au développement des activités et à la planification logistique de l'événement;
• Assurer le suivi des inscriptions et des communications, écrites et électroniques avec les
• Rechercher des associations et groupes communautaires ciblés pour la promotion des
activités proposées;
• Gérer les listes dʼinvitations et accréditations des partenaires publics et privés;
• Veiller à la mise à jour des coordonnées des contacts dans la base de données;
• Compiler les données nécessaires aux divers rapports;
• Répondre aux questions générales sur Doc Circuit Montréal par téléphone et courriel;
• Être présent(e) pendant la tenue de l'événement pour accueillir les participants et les
partenaires et assurer le bon déroulement des activités en collaboration avec l'équipe en
place et les bénévoles.

• Études en communications, en cinéma, en organisation dʼévénements ou dans un
domaine connexe;

The OUT IN THE SILENCE Campaign, an Emmy Award-winning documentary film and social activism project, is looking for a creative, highly-motivated, social media networking guru to help promote a new national Award for Youth Activism. (Learn more about the film campaign and youth award at:

The ideal candidate for this unique opportunity will be passionate about LGBT rights, savvy and experienced in the use of social media for cause-related marketing and promotion, and diligent in accomplishing tasks both large and small associated with such efforts.

Scope-of-Work: With guidance from campaign directors, the intern will identify and compile database of target contacts (national LGBT, youth service, safe schools, civil rights, and other networks, as well as school, campus, and community groups) and conduct email-based outreach effort to announce the Youth Activism Award contest. Additional outreach and promotion via Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other online networking sites will be critical – aimed at creating buzz about the youth activism award and getting news about it to "go viral."

The goal: To get as many groups as possible across the country to participate in the October contest by 'registering' to do an event on their campus or in their school or community.

Compensation: Initial stipend of $500, plus bonus incentive $$ for total number of registrations achieved – (details provided to qualified applicants). Additional stipend available for packing & mailing award contest materials to registered participants.

I had the privilege of taking Jon Fordham's seminar this evening and wanted to comment on it for those considering taking it.

I highly recommend taking it and feel that I learned a tremendous amount in a very short time. Jon and Evan were extremely detailed, thorough, and generous in their answers and explanations. We covered a wide arrange of topics, including post workflows for DSLR cameras, numerous codecs/formats and their specific limitations, preparing media for maximum usage and distribution (and not simply one function/outlet) as well as general media management-related topics at each stage of production.

Although the description outlines the topics that Jon and Evan (who also ran the seminar as well) covered, I was also asked ahead of time if I had particular postproduction workflow questions. I spoke on the phone with Evan and described the parameters of two ambitious projects that I have coming up in January.

I was very excited when I came in when I learned he had consulted several colleagues and had detailed information specific to my situation that was incredibly helpful and illuminating.

It is clear that both Jon and Evan are very excited about what they do and this definitely comes across in how they present material and respond to questions.

I have taken several other postproduction workshops in the past year on various topics and of varying quality, but this was one of the rare workshops that pushed away from the sort of Procrustean approach to technical aspects of filmmaking and postproduction.

I have also made a big effort to learn FCP more thoroughly as well as Avid and Premier (as several projects have required Premier) and this workshop definitely built on that knowledge and provided a deeper, much more nuanced understanding of concepts I thought I knew.

I can imagine that more seasoned postproduction professionals would benefit even more out of this workshop with Jon because of the his and Evan's breadth of experience and willingness to engage with a project's specific demands.

"Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?" is a documentary in the final phases of post production that investigates the roots of the current economic crisis, and the ongoing assault on working people in the United States. With clear, fact-based storytelling, "Heist" exposes the systemic, forty year corporate attack that has shattered America’s economy through deregulation, the outsourcing of jobs and tax policies favoring businesses and the very wealthy. Co-directed by Berkeley filmmaker Donald Goldmacher, the film is swiftly being edited for festival screenings in the Fall, and outreach and distribution in 2011 and 2012.

The ideal candidate for this unique opportunity will be interested in documentary film, and passionate about economic, social and environmental justice with experience in social media, community organizing and/or marketing and promotion. We ask for a 5-10 hr/week commitment for the next three months. This is an opportunity to learn firsthand about "hybrid" distribution strategies for important, social action oriented documentaries.

Scope-of-Work: With guidance from producers, the intern will help build strategic alliances by researching and contacting organizations doing critical work in the field; help build contact and email lists; assist in IndieGoGo fundraising campaign; promote the project via blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other online networking sites to help us create a buzz about "Heist"; and assist producers in developing outreach and distribution plans. The goal with the film is to help audiences understand the underpinnings of the country's economic problems and demonstrate what everyday Americans can do to make a difference.

Compensation: Unpaid internship initially with the opportunity to grow into role as project builds.

Full Frame exhibits nearly 100 documentary films in various categories. By completing the online application, you will be submitting to NEW DOCS, the festival’s competitive program which includes films completed in the last two years. In 2011, 66 films were selected for NEW DOCS from 1200 entries. NEW DOCS are eligible for a number of awards in various categories. The 2011 festival offered 9 awards, with prizes totaling over $50,000 in cash and services. The 2012 festival will take place Thursday, April 12, through Sunday, April 15.

Our 2011 Fellow, Erin Casper, has had an amazing past few months as she's attended the SXSW and IFFB film festivals, both ACE EditFests in New York and Los Angeles, met with editors Jean Tsien and Geof Bartz for career and craft advice, and received a shipment of books and DVDs from Powell's. Her first doc feature, "Our School," is showing at film festivals around the world. Lately she's been working with Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady on a new doc project. Annual Fellowship Provides Extensive Opportunities for Emerging Film Editors;
Open Call for Submissions Begins AUGUST 10, 2011

LOS ANGELES / NEW YORK – The Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship was created to assist emerging editors by supporting and developing their talent, expanding their creative community, and furthering their career aspirations. In conjunction with American Cinema Editors (ACE) and other partners, the Fellowship, in its second year, offers a wide array of opportunities for promising film editors, in both documentary and fiction.

Awarded once a year, the Fellowship honors the memory of gifted editor Karen Schmeer (“Fog of War;” “Fast, Cheap & Out of Control”; “Bobby Fischer Against the World”), who was killed in a hit-and-run car accident at age 39, on January 29, 2010.

KAREN SCHMEER, A.C.E., was an award-winning film editor whose work included Errol Morris’ “The Fog of War” (Academy Award Winner for Best Documentary), “Mr. Death,” and “Fast, Cheap and Out of Control.” She edited “Sketches of Frank Gehry,” directed by Sydney Pollack, “The Same River Twice,” “My Father the Genius,” and “American Experience: A Brilliant Madness.” Her fiction film “American Son” premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. For the HBO film Sergio, Karen won the Best Editing Award at Sundance in 2009. Karen was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and attended Boston University. On her way home from editing Liz Garbus’ “Bobby Fischer Against the World,” Karen was struck and killed by a car fleeing a robbery in New York City on January 29, 2010.

War ravaged and potentially the richest country in Africa, Angola is the epicenter of the African hardcore music scene. Sonia Ferreira and Wilker Flores live and breath rock and roll. They run and live in the Okutiuka orphanage in Huambo, Angola and have a dream. They are going to mount the first ever national rock concert, bringing together for the first time the best and the brightest in Angolan hardcore death metal, thrash metal and melodic deathcore. The site will be Huambo – the town most devastated during the war. Their shared dream is to pick up the pieces, reverse the ruinations of the past and lay down roots for the future, providing home and family for the burgeoning community rockers, much in the way they have provided refuge and continuity for the orphans of war they live and work with.

In a country where only 20% of the population have access to internet, radio and television they have their work cut out for them. But regardless of the obstacle, the drive is strong enough to overcome almost anything. As Wilker and Sonia explain, for them Rock is about "poetry, love and joy. It innovates and opens minds. It speaks about the fallacies of war and opposes cruelty, it pulls things out of our souls that we never knew were there. Rock is a form of expression that enables us to remove all the debris and our suffering from all the years of war. We are at the beginning of a great story. 10, 20 years from now people are going to tell this story. They'll look at us and and say, 'hey, you're one of the people who inspired rock, who inspired all of us here now, who love rock and play rock.'" So they set out on their quest to mobilize the loudest most powerful bands they can find to jointly and joyously scream into the night.

Call for Entries / Upcoming Deadline Aug. 17: Paley Center for Media $5,000 Documentary Pitch Workshop

The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan is now accepting entries for its 12th annual documentary pitch workshop for emerging directors with work-in-progress films. The regular entry deadline is Wednesday, August 17.

This is a competition for a $5,000 finishing grant for a relatively new documentary directors (two or less projects) with a project they've started but haven't finished. This year's sponsor is The Documentary Channel.

To apply, you'll need to submit ten minutes of selects from your project. PCM chooses five finals to pitch their projects in Manhattan in late October in front of an audience and a panel of judges, who choose the winner of the grant.

Regular deadline is August 17, with entry fees going up for subsequent deadlines.
