This salon series brings together filmmakers and documentary film aficionados to discuss and debate great issues in documentary cinema. Each salon will focus around a particular sub-genre of documentary and use clips from documentary films and questions from the moderator to spur reflection and discussion. This salon's topic will focus on how documentary has influenced and is influenced by "reality" television. Now an almost default setting for mainstream entertainment, Reality TV emerged in the early 1970s as a highly experimental and controversial mode of documentary expression. This salon focuses on Reality TVâ€™s intersections with different trends in documentary filmmaking, how the mode has shifted over the past four decades, and its current place in the broadcast industry. Groundbreaking programs such as PBSâ€™s An American Family (1973) will be central to the discussion. We are pleased to welcome guest facilitator, Josh Glick. He is a PhD candidate at Yale University in the departments of Film Studies and American Studies. Now in its seventh year, the Docs In Progress work-in-progress screenings provide an opportunity for local and visiting documentary filmmakers to screen their rough cuts to a general audience and get valuable feedback. Facilitators from Docs In Progress moderate a feedback session with the audience after the screening. This honest and constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing the film. The next film to be screened is Beth Murphy's The List. The film follows Kirk Johnson who, after leading reconstruction teams for the U.S. government in Iraq, returns home only to discover that his Iraqi friends and colleagues are being killed, kidnapped or forced into exile by radical militias... all because they worked for the United States trying to help rebuild their country. Stunned by fear-mongering and stagnating bureaucracy that prevents these Iraqis from being rescued, Kirk begins compiling a list of these allies and, one by one, helps them find refuge and a new life in America.

I had the privilege of taking Jon Fordham's seminar this evening and wanted to comment on it for those considering taking it.
I highly recommend taking it and feel that I learned a tremendous amount in a very short time. Jon and Evan were extremely detailed, thorough, and generous in their answers and explanations. We covered a wide arrange of topics, including post workflows for DSLR cameras, numerous codecs/formats and their specific limitations, preparing media for maximum usage and distribution (and not simply one function/outlet) as well as general media management-related topics at each stage of production.
Although the description outlines the topics that Jon and Evan (who also ran the seminar as well) covered, I was also asked ahead of time if I had particular postproduction workflow questions. I spoke on the phone with Evan and described the parameters of two ambitious projects that I have coming up in January.
I was very excited when I came in when I learned he had consulted several colleagues and had detailed information specific to my situation that was incredibly helpful and illuminating.
It is clear that both Jon and Evan are very excited about what they do and this definitely comes across in how they present material and respond to questions.
I have taken several other postproduction workshops in the past year on various topics and of varying quality, but this was one of the rare workshops that pushed away from the sort of Procrustean approach to technical aspects of filmmaking and postproduction.
I have also made a big effort to learn FCP more thoroughly as well as Avid and Premier (as several projects have required Premier) and this workshop definitely built on that knowledge and provided a deeper, much more nuanced understanding of concepts I thought I knew.
I can imagine that more seasoned postproduction professionals would benefit even more out of this workshop with Jon because of the his and Evan's breadth of experience and willingness to engage with a project's specific demands.

"Heist: Who Stole the American Dream?" is a documentary in the final phases of post production that investigates the roots of the current economic crisis, and the ongoing assault on working people in the United States. With clear, fact-based storytelling, "Heist" exposes the systemic, forty year corporate attack that has shattered Americaâ€™s economy through deregulation, the outsourcing of jobs and tax policies favoring businesses and the very wealthy. Co-directed by Berkeley filmmaker Donald Goldmacher, the film is swiftly being edited for festival screenings in the Fall, and outreach and distribution in 2011 and 2012.
The ideal candidate for this unique opportunity will be interested in documentary film, and passionate about economic, social and environmental justice with experience in social media, community organizing and/or marketing and promotion. We ask for a 5-10 hr/week commitment for the next three months. This is an opportunity to learn firsthand about "hybrid" distribution strategies for important, social action oriented documentaries.
Scope-of-Work: With guidance from producers, the intern will help build strategic alliances by researching and contacting organizations doing critical work in the field; help build contact and email lists; assist in IndieGoGo fundraising campaign; promote the project via blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other online networking sites to help us create a buzz about "Heist"; and assist producers in developing outreach and distribution plans. The goal with the film is to help audiences understand the underpinnings of the country's economic problems and demonstrate what everyday Americans can do to make a difference.

War ravaged and potentially the richest country in Africa, Angola is the epicenter of the African hardcore music scene. Sonia Ferreira and Wilker Flores live and breath rock and roll. They run and live in the Okutiuka orphanage in Huambo, Angola and have a dream. They are going to mount the first ever national rock concert, bringing together for the first time the best and the brightest in Angolan hardcore death metal, thrash metal and melodic deathcore. The site will be Huambo – the town most devastated during the war. Their shared dream is to pick up the pieces, reverse the ruinations of the past and lay down roots for the future, providing home and family for the burgeoning community rockers, much in the way they have provided refuge and continuity for the orphans of war they live and work with.
In a country where only 20% of the population have access to internet, radio and television they have their work cut out for them. But regardless of the obstacle, the drive is strong enough to overcome almost anything. As Wilker and Sonia explain, for them Rock is about "poetry, love and joy. It innovates and opens minds. It speaks about the fallacies of war and opposes cruelty, it pulls things out of our souls that we never knew were there. Rock is a form of expression that enables us to remove all the debris and our suffering from all the years of war. We are at the beginning of a great story. 10, 20 years from now people are going to tell this story. They'll look at us and and say, 'hey, you're one of the people who inspired rock, who inspired all of us here now, who love rock and play rock.'" So they set out on their quest to mobilize the loudest most powerful bands they can find to jointly and joyously scream into the night.

The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan is now accepting entries for its 12th annual documentary pitch workshop for emerging directors with work-in-progress films. The regular entry deadline is Wednesday, August 17.
This is a competition for a $5,000 finishing grant for a relatively new documentary directors (two or less projects) with a project they've started but haven't finished. This year's sponsor is The Documentary Channel.
To apply, you'll need to submit ten minutes of selects from your project. PCM chooses five finals to pitch their projects in Manhattan in late October in front of an audience and a panel of judges, who choose the winner of the grant.
Regular deadline is August 17, with entry fees going up for subsequent deadlines.

Nicely done, Catherine, but not sure whether you're looking to get hired to do more of your short pieces or looking for subjects to build up your collection of them (for possible distribution?). Can you tell us more about what your plans are?
Thank you Doug. I'm glad you liked it. To answer your questions, both really. I hadn't thought about creating a compilation piece but it definitely is food for thought. Also, I want to mention that I'm not just interested in creating films for artists but also any person who creates something unique and valuable in some way – chef, teacher, gardener, founder of an organization that helps others or a cause or creative endeavor, artisans, a filmmaker that creates a unique approach to filmmaking (like you???) – I have also made short videos nonprofits/NGOs and looking for more opportunities to do that too.
Currently I'm planning to make a few short films – one about someone who continues to do hand engraving, while machines are taking over and another about a man who builds clocks.
Below I have posted another video I made for the World Wide Orphans Foundation that I shot in Haiti. The founder is Jane Aronson who's been getting a lot of press coverage lately. It's only about 5 minutes. I'd love it if you can take a look at it.

Our July DocuClub will take place on Tuesday, September 20, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker).
This month, we will screen a rough cut of ZIPPER by Amy Nicholson. On a small rented lot in Coney Island, Eddie Miranda proudly operates a 38-year old contraption called the Zipper. When the property is sold, Eddie becomes the victim of a power struggle between an opportunistic developer and the City of New York over the future of the famous amusement park. A story about politics, greed, land use and public policy, ZIPPER chronicles a critical period in Coney Islandâ€™s history and examines the impact of economic development on an American icon.
Director/Producer Amy Nicholson's first non-fiction film, BEAUTY SCHOOL, a wry portrait of the New York School of dog grooming, premiered at Hot Docs in 2002 and aired on PBS and the Documentary Channel. Her following documentary, MUSKRAT LOVELY, premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival and went on to screen at Silverdocs, the Florida Film Festival, and Brooklyn International, among others. It was also broadcast nationally on the 2007 season of Independent Lens. She has also directed several commercial projects and consults as an advertising creative director. ZIPPER is her third film.
Co-Editor Jonah Moran has edited the award-wining Sundance Channel series ICONOCLASTS with director Joe Berlinger, and the ambitious Discovery Channel series SAN QUENTIN FILM SCHOOL, with Bruce Synofsky. Co-Editor John Young is commercial editor at Homestead Editorial. A graduate of Tisch School of the Arts, he has cut 30-second spots for major multinational advertising clients like MTV, ESPN, Chevrolet, Lâ€™Oreal, Reeseâ€™s and Verizon Wireless (â€œCan you hear me now?â€). His most recent work includes campaigns for Dell, the NHL, Project (RED) and Nationwide Insurance. Johnâ€™s feature film credits include the Parker Cross comedy Fortunes, and the documentary feature MUSKRAT LOVELY.
Assistant Producer Katy Jacobs graduated from New York Universityâ€™s Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television in 2009. In addition to her duties with ZIPPER , she is an Associate Producer to Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Alice Elliott, director of TTHE COLLECTOR OF BEDFORD STREET. Jacobs has assisted with programming and operations for several film festivals including Brooklyn International, Rural Route Film Festival and DOC NYC. She also serves as the Director of Educational Distribution at VSM Productions and is a member of the New York Film & Video Council.

Docs In Progress Screening This Wednesday Night, September 14 (DC area)
This work-in-progress screening provides an opportunity for local and visiting documentary filmmakers to screen their unfinished films to an audience and get valuable feedback. After screening each film, facilitators from Docs In Progress moderate a feedback session with the audience. This honest and constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing the film.

UnionDocs seeks a screenings and administrative intern to aid in the daily operations of this exciting non-profit. The intern will be exposed to all levels of management and take an important role in the regular activities of this quickly growing organization. The ideal candidate will be an able problem-solver with excellent writing and organizational skills who is seeking a career in the arts administration. Knowledge of Google Docs, Wordpress, Flick, Photoshop and/or Final Cut Pro is a plus.
This opportunity will provide enormous exposure to the NYC documentary scene and connection to a talented community of artists. The internship will run from early October through January and requires an 8-16 hour commitment per week which will consist of one afternoon spent in the office and one Saturday or Sunday helping manage an evening film screening. There are no stipends available at this time, but college credit can be arranged.

The 10th anniversaries of 9-11 and the October 7th US-led invasion of Afghanistan are upon us. As Americans reflect on the impact of these events on our lives, Community Supported Film is providing an opportunity to also reflect on the situation from an Afghan perspective.
CSFilm is hoping to get these films seen as widely as possible, and is seeking collaborations with organizations, groups, government officials, schools, activists, organizers, and individuals to get these films put to use in discussions about Afghanistan. These 10 films come from The Fruit of Our Labor – an intimate collection of stories about survival in war-ridden Afghanistan, made in a filmmaking training in Kabul last fall. Each documentary short offers a personal and first-hand point of view rarely seen or heard in the US, even after 10 years of intense media coverage. As a series, these films bring to life Afghansâ€™ daily efforts to address their challenging social and economic conditions â€“ providing an insider perspective behind and beyond the battlefront.
Seven of the 10 films focus on women and women's issues; four of which were filmed and produced by Afghan women. Their cameras eavesdrop on the saucy banter of women as they tend to everyday tasks such as baking bread and planting seedlings, and on their consoling but firm words as they counsel each other in the aftermath of traumatic war injuries. One video short documents a womanâ€™s search for her lost husband â€“ one of the nationsâ€™ 1 million addicted to heroine, while a pregnant woman navigates the options for healthcare and birth control – without a functioning maternity clinic nearby. The Fruit of Our Labor details Afghansâ€™ inexorable struggle to survive: from the constant quest for water for themselves and for their fields, to the humble hawking of fruit from urban pushcarts.
As an organization that trains Afghan documentary filmmakers, Community Supported Film works for an Afghanistan that is not abandoned and left to survive another humanitarian crisis. CSFilmâ€™s online airing of The Fruit of Our Labor between the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the 10/7 invasion of Afghanistan seeks to put Afghans into our daily considerations and invigorate conversations about the immediate and long-term future of Afghanistan.
Community Supported Film
CSFilm trains local women and men in documentary filmmaking with a focus on their communityâ€™s social and economic development issues. Their stories, rooted in realities often unrepresented in the media, are used to influence local and international perspectives on sustainable paths to a more peaceful and equitable world. In the interest of amplifying the voices and expertise of Afghans, Community Supported Film conducted an intensive 5-week training of 10 Afghans in documentary production in the fall of 2010. Participatory video engages and empowers groups of people to work together to tell their own stories, experiences, and viewpoints through video. Facilitated by more experienced filmmakers, participatory video can help provide a voice for marginalized communities with potential for advocacy, therapeutic benefits, and community-building. The process of filmmaking is often as important as the resulting films.
Docs In Progress is excited to welcome local facilitating filmmakers and participants to talk about the process and impact of making a participatory video and share their resulting works. It is a way to find out more about this unique genre of documentary filmmaking both from a logistical perspective and to examine larger issues of the relationship between filmmakers, â€œsubjects,â€ and audiences.The participants will include filmmakers Joy Haynes and Ellie Walton, accompanied by Maureen Jais-Mick, the Director of Community Outreach and Volunteer Services at Saint Elizabethâ€™s Hospital; and filmmakers Brandon Kramer and Lance Kramer, accompanied by James Magruder, a Green Corps trainee.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Ellie Walton and Joy Haynes from Video Diary Productions, LLC have produced a range of radio and video documentaries, from an ex-guerrilla radio station in Guatemala to prisons in London, from Scotland to Washington, DC. Feature length documentaries include, Chocolate City, which explores the gentrification of Washington, DC, and Igual Que TÃº, which takes you through a week in the life of an immigrant day laborer. Their most recent project, Voices From Within, is an intimate look into the lives of five residents of Saint Elizabeths psychiatric hospital, Washington DCâ€™s public psychiatric hospital. Like many of their other works, Voices From Within represents a collaborative approach to filmmaking where the subject is not just examined, but is the examiner. By providing equipment, training, and support to communities who are often generalized and stereotyped, Video Diaries LLC offers an unexpected glimpse into the lives of immigrant day laborers, senior citizens, incarcerated teens, and long-term residents of mental hospitals, among others. The belief is that filmmaking as an interactive and transformational experience that reveals and inspires deeper understanding and dialogue around our common community. They will be joined by Maureen Jais-Mick, the Director of Community Outreach and Volunteer Services at Saint Elizabethâ€™s Hospital who was instrumental in making the Voices From Within project possible. Jais-Mick was previously a volunteer with Lens & Pens, Brushes & Friends at Saint Elizabethâ€™s while working as director of Development and Community Outreach at Green Door, a program that supports adults with mental illness who live in the community. Before joining the staff of Green Door, she was director of Development at N Street Village, a community for homeless women and low-income families.
Brandon Kramer and Lance Kramer from Meridian Hill Pictures are award-winning filmmakers and educators dedicated to producing and sharing innovative documentaries from diverse community perspectives. Based in Washington DC, their focus is on crafting films that advance dialogue and impact broad audiences. They have worked with a diversity of local and national organizations and programs, including the Kennedy Centerâ€™s On Location program, Seeds of Peace, Human Rights Campaign, and the Center for Inspired Teaching. Their latest participatory video project is with Washington Parks & Peopleâ€™s DC Green Corps. Funded by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, Green Corps is an innovative green job training program empowering low-income Washington DC residents with the knowledge and tools to enhance community parks and other public spaces throughout the city. Through a collaborative media education project with Meridian Hill Pictures this past spring, 34 Green Corps trainees employed video storytelling to express in their own voice how urban forestry and greening are helping to meet critical needs in DCâ€™s underserved communities. The Kramers will be joined by James Magruder, one of the Green Corps trainees and narrator of one of the Green Corps videos.

Directors of Photography, editors, sound recordists, mixers, graphic artists, designers, colorists, composersâ€”these are the brilliant specialists who save the day countless times on countless documentary films, lending their skill and soul again and again to enable Directors and Producers to realize their dreams. But do they get credit and recognition? Love and understanding? Not enough! We thought it would be fun, fitting, and overdue, to bring the whole documentary community together to drag some of our shy artistic and technical masters into a little spotlight. Weâ€™ll explore their critical, quiet crafts and celebrate their enormous and under-celebrated contributions to the films of their far more famous directing/producing brethren.
The Honoree will present and discuss clips of his/her work, take questions, and be toasted en masse, followed by mingling with cheap drinks and refreshments. Director/Producers who have worked with the Honoree will be invited to testify to their powers. We hope to attract an intergenerational audience: film students who can learn about important professional film career paths, and Doc Makers who want to raise a glass in appreciation.

Hi Doug! The doors open at 6:30pm and we'll start the presentation at 7:00pm. It would be great to see you there. We're really hoping to get a good turnout for Rosemary and a strong enough showing that we can make the series ongoing. And I've been wanting to connect with you anyway.

Tonight we kick off with Rosemary Rotondi, 7PM at NYFA on 17th Street, just east of Union Square, in their very cool old building, the old Tammany Hall.
Next HERO is STEVE PEQUIGNOT of GLUE, post-production pro extraordinaire (Barbara Rick's words, thanks Barbara!) 10/4 at NYFA off union square 7PM (doors open at 6:30). low-key but fun events I hope, I've never done events before so nervous and would love community input.
A note to director/producers: please keep this series in mind if you have deep admiration for and gratitude to a specialist whom you've worked with. Maybe this is a place to honor them? Would be happy to hear from you. Thanks to all. (Love the D-Word!!!)
Wow, Steve's a fantastic choice! He's done the post on my last two films and I don't know of a more knowledgeable guy who can communicate it all in plain English. You're two for two, Immy.

We had a wonderful event tonight – it went really really well!
Rosemary was fantastic. I learned a lot. I had no idea how much straight out investigative reporting she does. quite amazing, under the guise of looking for visuals she's really sleuthing out PROOF on several productions (i don't want to spill all the beans, i think some of the current things she mentioned tonight may be news scoops actually)
Crayton Robey also spoke, about working with Rosemary on his film, and was inspirational about Rosemary and about the passion of filmmaking overall –
the students had many excellent questions, just kept going and going, i couldn't have been happier!
and Rosemary looked great in her NYFA hoodie (the big swag of the nite)

Here's to the first UNSUNG HERO OF DOCUMENTARY toasted in NYFA's new guest speaker series! We had a great time last night learning about the secret life of a world-class archival researcher. And we thoroughly enjoyed dragging, our shy but brilliant colleague into the spotlight for the first time so that the doc-makers whose films she has enhanced immeasurably – and the students who were thrilled to learn from her – could celebrate her special creative artistry.
