DocuClub in November!

Our November DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, November 16, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker).

This month, we will screen a rough cut of Brasslands by the Meerkat Media Collective. Once a year, a tiny Serbian village explodes with brass cacophony and riotous celebration as half a million fans descend upon Guča, the world’s largest trumpet competition. On the 50th anniversary of the festival, an unlikely American brass band undertakes a journey to the source of their inspiration, barely a decade after NATO bombs rocked Belgrade. The citizens of Guča prepare for the oncoming hordes with a mix of national pride and nervous energy. The older generation has lived through world war, socialist rule, national fragmentation, and ethnic cleansing – all of which has given way to a festival at the center of a evolving national identity. Middle-aged business owners hope to capitalize on a growing festival and huge influx of cash. The youngest watch the best trumpeters in the world play their country’s traditional music; some yearn to play on that stage, while others throw on their headphones to pump Metallica and Lady Gaga. Brasslands explores the moment when cultural appropriation confronts its origin – in this war-scarred landscape, disparate societies find common ground in a joyous, deeply transcendent music that leaves no ear unaffected. Meerkat Media Collective is a self-organized community of media makers committed to creating innovative and thought-provoking films through shared authorship. Since 2005, they have produced and distributed over twenty short films and two features. Our moderator will be filmmaker Kelly Anderson. She is an award-winning independent producer and director of documentary and narrative films. Her most recent production is Never Enough, a documentary about American’s relationship with their material possessions, which won an Artistic Excellence award at the 2010 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Other recent directing work includes Someplace Like Home, a documentary about the redevelopment of Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn, which she made for FUREE (Families United for Racial and Economic Equality). In 2004, Anderson produced and directed (with Tami Gold) and edited Every Mother's Son, a documentary for ITVS about mothers whose children have been killed by police officers and who have become national spokespeople on the issue of police brutality. Every Mother's Son premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and had its broadcast premiere on PBS’s P.O.V. series. Gold and Anderson also made Making a Killing, a half-hour documentary that addresses the marketing practices of the tobacco industry in the developing world. Making a Killing premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, was screened for delegates at the World Health Organization and aired on television in Nigeria, Serbia, Lagos and Vietnam. In 2000, Anderson completed Shift, a one-hour drama for ITVS about the volatile relationship between a North Carolina waitress and a telemarketing prison inmate, which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and aired on many PBS stations. Her other documentaries include Out at Work (with Tami Gold), which was screened at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and was shown on HBO. Screening of Hidden Battles with Director Victoria Mills
How does killing change the person who pulls the trigger? Hidden Battles is a dramatic and deeply personal documentary film about the psychological impact of war on five soldiers. Representing a cross-section of nationalities, gender, class and race, these soldiers unveil intimate memories about the central act of combat — killing another human being — and how they create a life for themselves afterward.

Victoria Mills is an award winning documentary filmmaker as well as a full-time practicing psychoanalyst. In conjunction with the films, she leads workshops with universities, national women's organizations, and grassroots community groups. As an analyst with 25 years experience, Victoria has worked extensively with people of different cultures who have experienced trauma, including those who suffered from 9/11. She is also is a training analyst and on the faculty of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, and supervises graduate and PhD students at several universities.

Jennifer Karady is an artist whom has worked with American veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for the past four years to create staged narrative photographs that depict their individual stories and address their difficulties in adjusting to civilian life. After an extensive interview process with the veteran and his/her family, Karady collaborates with the veteran to restage a chosen moment from war within the safe space of their everyday environment, often surrounded by family and friends.

Helen Benedict's sixth novel, Sand Queen, is culled from real life stories of female soldiers and Iraqis, offering a story of love, courage and struggle from the rare perspective of two young women on opposite sides of a war. Benedict has won three major awards for her work on soldiers: The 2010 Exceptional Merit in Media Award from the National Women’s Political Caucus, The Ken Book Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness for 2010, and the 2008 James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. She has testified twice to Congress on behalf of women in the military. She is a professor of journalism at Columbia University.

Discussion with Scott Thompson
Scott Thompson is the Director of Social Dialogue and Training Initiatives for Intersections International, a New York based NGO that works at the intersection of communities in conflict. His expertise is in programming for returning military persons and civilians, utilizing psychological healing processes to help heal the rift between these groups. He oversees Intersections’ Veteran-Civilian Dialogue project, a community building effort for returning soldiers to provide meaningful tools of reconciliation and healing.

Buzos (“trash divers”) in the Dominican Republic struggle to maintain a normal life even as they live off a smoking garbage dump in the outskirts of the city. For the pennies they scrape together each day the buzos risk injury, infection, food poisoning, violence and continuing a cycle of illiteracy, malnutrition, and being considered little more than pariahs to local government officials.

GREAT OFFICE AVAILABLE FOR SHARE – DECEMBER 1st

The office is clean and large with wood floors, high ceilings, great natural light and central air conditioning/heat. The building is safe and quiet with lots of friendly, creative neighbors on the floor: filmmakers, photographers, etc. Great location, a few blocks from either the 7th Avenue or 15th Street/Prospect Park F stops and lots of great bodegas, cafes, Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc.

Space is available December 1st for short or long term rental. The ideal candidate is someone who works independently or creatively and is not on the phone all day. You'd get a large work space that includes wireless internet, refrigerator and espresso/coffee machine. There is currently an oversized desk, chair and shelves for your use or you can bring your own.

Rent is somewhat negotiable, between $250-300, depending on your work schedule so please let me know what kind of work you do and your typical work week--if you have one. Photos upon request.

I will be travelling there to hold a guest lecture on the invitation of Prof Daniel Goulding, whose book The Yugoslav Experience on Yugoslav cinema, was a great inspiration to me in making Cinema Komunisto. I was thinking of using the opportunity of my visit to shoot a brief interview with Prof Goulding for the Cinema Komunisto website and would be very grateful if there's anyone in the Cleveland area who could help me find a (very basic) camera to do this. I've posted here before and had terrific luck. I am looking for a talented producer/shooter in the Rochester, New York area, who ideally has (or has access to) a 5D or an HD video rig to do a short piece for us here at Etsy. We do 3-4 minute doc shorts here, and this one would be a stylized, process piece of about 90 seconds – it needs to shoot at the end of the month.

New York City streets and the people who walk them are filled with all kinds of dreams and potential. When NYC calls out people flock, only to realize the bittersweet fruit that smells like New York, can also "kill" them if they hold on to a facade for too long. The 3 1/2-minute film pays a cinematic tribute to poet Gil Scott Heron.

DocuClub in December!



Our December DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, December 14, 7 p.m., at 92YTribeca, located at 200 Hudson (at Canal). 


This month, we will screen a rough cut of My Brooklyn by Kelly Anderson. The documentary chronicles the dramatic changes that have occurred in Downtown Brooklyn over the past ten years, and shows how these changes are not natural, but fueled by public policy. The film documents how an obsession with upscale environments driven by the Wall Street bubble is threatening the very economic, racial, and ethnic diversity and neighborhood character that have historically drawn many generations to Brooklyn, and made it unique. This process has led to a fierce battle over the soul of the city, the themes of which resonate with urban communities across the county. Director/Producer Kelly Anderson is an award-winning independent producer and director of documentary and narrative films. Her most recent production is Never Enough, a documentary about American’s relationship with their material possessions, which won an Artistic Excellence award at the 2010 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Other recent directing work includes Someplace Like Home, a documentary about the redevelopment of Fulton Mall in Downtown Brooklyn, which she made for FUREE (Families United for Racial and Economic Equality). In 2004, Anderson produced and directed (with Tami Gold) and edited Every Mother's Son, a documentary for ITVS about mothers whose children have been killed by police officers and who have become national spokespeople on the issue of police brutality. Every Mother's Son premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, and had its broadcast premiere on PBS’s P.O.V. series. Gold and Anderson also made Making a Killing, a half-hour documentary that addresses the marketing practices of the tobacco industry in the developing world. Making a Killing premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, was screened for delegates at the World Health Organization and aired on television in Nigeria, Serbia, Lagos and Vietnam. In 2000, Anderson completed Shift, a one-hour drama for ITVS about the volatile relationship between a North Carolina waitress and a telemarketing prison inmate, which premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and aired on many PBS stations. Her other documentaries include Out at Work (with Tami Gold), which was screened at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival and was shown on HBO. Writer/Producer Allison Lirish Dean has covered arts, culture, and urban planning and policy issues for public radio, and for publications such as The Next American City and Gotham Gazette. Her film production credits include Someplace Like Home (2008), an award-winning video for FUREE, a Brooklyn-based community organization. My Brooklyn grew in part out of extensive ethnographic research Dean conducted about the Fulton Mall as part of a study led by the Pratt Center for Community Development. In addition to her work as an independent media producer, Dean is Communications Associate for PolicyLink, a non-profit focused on equity and public policy.

Editor Kathryn Barnier has been working in documentary productions for over 20 years. She edited Banished: How Whites Drove Blacks Out of Town in America (directed by Marco Williams), which was shown at Sundance, The Pan African Film Festival, True/False, the Miami International Film Festival (Grand Jury Prize), Full Frame, Silver Docs, Nashville Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Sundance at BAM, and Human Rights Watch Film Festival. Her other editing credits include Out of Status, The Mystery of Love and The Search For Solutions.

Co-Producer Lisa Willis is an intellectual property attorney who has lived in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, since 2006. She has been involved with a number of documentaries, including Skid Row (2008), about the homeless community in downtown Los Angeles, and A.W.O.L. (in production), about African-American athletes. Before law school, Willis taught children with special needs and ran a preschool and afterschool in Harlem. Because of her experience as an educator, she always knew that she wanted to raise her daughter in a diverse community and Fort Greene seemed like the perfect place. As a resident of this changing neighborhood, she is very familiar with the benefits and challenges of living in a gentrifying community. She was drawn to My Brooklyn because she believes residents of gentrifying communities need to have an honest and real conversation with each other and believes this film can be a catalyst for this.

Our moderator will be Mary Kerr. She began her film industry career working in the hospitality department of the Sundance Film Festival in 1993. She worked for the Sundance Institute in various capacities over the next several years, eventually becoming a film programmer. In 1999, she left Sundance to work as a writer in radio/television, but continued programming as a consultant for the Los Angeles Film Festival, Gen Art, and Maryland Film Festivals, as well as the IFP Market. In 2003, Kerr became director of programming for the inaugural SILVERDOCS: AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival and helped it to become one of the world’s premiere documentary festivals. Since 2006, she has served as executive director of the Flaherty/International Film Seminars, Inc., presenters of the annual Robert Flaherty Film Seminar and monthly screening program, Flaherty NYC. She has served on panels for the Independent Gotham Awards, ITVS, P.O.V., Tribeca Gucci Fund, and juries for the Full Frame, Newport, Sarasota, Black Maria, and Nordisk Panorama Film Festivals. She was also curator of the 2009 and 2010 Council on Foundations Film and Video Festivals.

ATTENTION MEDIA MAKERS ADDRESSING AGING AND ELDER RIGHTS

Working Films, with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, announces Reel Aging: Real Change, an initiative that will tie compelling documentary films and transmedia projects that explore aging to ongoing policy work and grassroots campaigns supporting older populations globally. Reel Aging: Real Change will begin on March 23, 2012 with a four-day residency where eight to ten media teams will sharpen their strategies for audience and community engagement. On Tuesday, March 27, the teams will present their projects to regional, national and global NGOs, funders, government agencies, activists, and policy makers – all leaders in the field of aging who have a track record of supporting elder rights, respect and health. The goal: to embed the film and media projects into on-the-ground efforts by the advocates in the room. Hosted in Washington, DC in collaboration with American University’s Center for Social Media, this day-long, strategic convening will launch a collaborative campaign between the participating media makers and the NGOs.

We are seeking applications from media makers for participation in Reel Aging: Real Change. All nonfiction projects that explore the aging experience are eligible to apply, and applicants may be at any stage of production or distribution, from new and completed projects to works-in-progress.

I want to thank Doug Block and D-word's help with my project currently funding on Kickstarter.com, titled, Paths of Glory: Anatomy of a Film.

Big Voice Pictures is producing a documentary about adult survivors of child sexual abuse, who are seeking justice by bringing sexual offenders to court. The film explores the challenges victims face and how the system and current laws often protects pedophiles while re-traumatizing the victims.

DocuClub in January!

Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Wednesday, January 18, at 7p.m., at DCTV.

This month, we will screen a rough cut of The Great Chicken Wing Hunt by Matt Reynolds. The Great Chicken Wing Hunt follows a band of misfits on a quest to find the world’s best Buffalo wing. It takes a humorous look at the popularity of Buffalo wings, one of America’s most most loved foods, relationships, globalization, and the way trivial things inspire us. It asks the question, are there perfect things?

Director/Editor Matt Reynolds. From 2004 to 2007, he reported on eastern and central Europe for Reuters and The New York Times. Since moving to New York in 2008, he has worked as a film editor. As an assistant editor, he worked under Suzy Elmiger ("Big Night") and the late Karen Schmeer ("Fog of War;" "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control"). In 2001, Reynolds was editor for the launch of NHL Live, a daily talk show on NHL Network, and recently co-edited History Channel’s "Zombie’s: a Living History." "The Great Chicken Wing Hunt" is his first feature as a director.

Producer Elizabeth Mandel has worked for over ten years as a documentary producer and director. Most recently, she directed "Pushing the Elephant," together with Beth Davenport (broadcast on PBS’s “Independent Lens” on March 29, 2011). Her producing credits include "Arctic Son" (Dir: Andrew Walton, broadcast POV 2007), and, as co-producer on Jennifer Fox’s "Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman."

Supervising Editor Mary Manhardt has cut some of the most respected American documentaries of recent years, including "Street Fight," nominated for an Oscar in 2006, and "American Teen" (2008). Her work has won awards at Sundance, Hot Docs, SXSW, Tribeca and IDFA film festivals and aired on HBO, PBS, MTV, ABC, and AMC. Among the films she has edited or co-edited are "Monica & David," "The Farm" and "Camp Victory, Afghanistan."

Southern Circuit is the nation's first regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities in a nine-state region in the South with an interactive way to experience independent film and engage with indie filmmakers. The tour utilizes an intimate context to connect audiences with filmmakers and connect with films they might not otherwise have the opportunity to see. Films, including animation, documentaries, experimental and narrative work, are submitted for consideration for the Circuit through an annual nationwide open call for submissions.

Southern Circuit is open to any filmmaker living in the United States with a valid driver's license. Filmmakers may submit a feature-length work or a group of short films whose combined time reaches feature length – at least 45 minutes with a maximum of 120 minutes.

The application deadline is Wednesday February 15, 2012. Early Bird Registration ends Tuesday January 31, 2012.

Call Richmond disappeared in 1977 and remained missing for 20 years. After Call's sister Rebecca found him homeless and suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia, she dedicated her life to putting her brother back together. 2012 TWN Video Production Workshop – Applications now available

Low cost hands-on training program emphasizing the training and support of people of color and members of marginalized communities. Aimed at working people, the 4 month workshop meets evenings and films during weekends. Limited to 9 participants, students focus on the pre-production, production and post-production skills necessary to take a short project from conception to completion, with training in scriptwriting, research, lighting, camera, sound and editing. Led by film professionals, this 34 year program will begin in early April. The workshop is time intensive and participants must be able to attend regular class meetings as well as meet the out-of-class demands of pre- production, production, and post-production. Prior film, video or related experience is recommended but not required; creativity, self-initiative, time and a collaborative spirit are. The cost of the 2012 workshop will be $600.

Each student will make one short film about an elderly person from their community. Students will learn everything from camera operation to interviewing skills, lighting, sound, producing and editing.

Hey D-Word Community -

Seeking an enthusiastic FCP editor to take on at least one episode of a limited series doc project intended for public television. If you or someone you know might be a good fit, I'd love to get in touch or hear any and all recommendations!

The Film: "The Times of John McDonogh" (working title) tells the story of the startling bequest to education that a single eccentric millionaire made upon his death in 1850, how that bequest led, by 2006, to the creation of both some of the most blighted public schools and one of the most privileged private schools in the US and how, in the current tumultuous moment in education, each of these disparate schools is now fighting to either re-make itself or protect the things that made it strong in the first place.

Creatively, the aim is to interweave two distinct narrative approaches. First are the stories, told via verite footage, of specific teachers and students at five of the schools that still bear this founder's name and legacy today (two traditional public schools in New Orleans, two more newly-chartered public schools in New Orleans, and one private school in Baltimore) as they live and teach over the course of one pivotal school year. The second is the historical narrative of how these five schools evolved from one man's very specific, utopian vision to such contrasting places along our contemporary spectrum of education. With these two stories intertwined, the twists, turns, and questions raised along the way lead straight through many of the turning points of segregation, political gamesmanship, neglect, and socio-economic inequality that have shaped US schools from the beginning.

Project Status: The wealth of material involved is both blessing and curse. We shot, over the course of the school year we spent in the schools, 300 (!) hours of verite footage of (and interviews with) a select group of teachers, students, and administrators. What's more, there's a rich and surprising array of archival material about the history of the schools to pull from, much of it already gathered together by the production. But there is also a very clear plan. Every inch of the footage is meticulously logged, all of the interviews are thoroughly sub-clipped and labelled, and a paper script outline is in place for the series from start to finish, scene by scene, both for the compelling contemporary characters and the historical narratives, and the ways they might well intermix. We have a work-in-progress-trailer (I can send it to you upon request) and there's a rough assembly of most of the first episode.

What We're Looking For: Over the next five months, our goal is to edit as many episodes of the series as we can manage (at minimum three, with the other three to follow thereafter). Though we could work with someone who could only foreseeably tackle one. To date, all of the editing work has been done by me, the beleaguered, lone gunman producer/director, and while my enthusiasm for the material runneth over, I am neither a very good, nor particularly fast, editor, nor do I have the distance from the material that would probably help the process most at this point. So we're seeking a sharp editor who'd be excited about helping shape this kaleidoscope of specific stories into something awesome. While I'm working on a first-time indie doc-maker's meager budget, I'm not expecting someone to work for free either, so we could talk more about what might make sense for a rate in the short term. Grant writing will soon be in progress. I'm in Los Angeles, and would prefer to work with someone local, though I wouldn't rule out other arrangements. The editor would need their own FC7 system. My hunch is this would not be the right undertaking for a first-time feature doc editor, considering the expansive and interlocking nature of the raw material (not to mention my own green-ness). But someone with a practiced hand and eye would, I suspect, find the way well-paved for a really rewarding collaboration, no ego involved. More than anything, I hope to find someone (this is starting to sound like a dreamy-eyed singles ad) who is passionate about social documentary storytelling, curious about looking at the same subject from different angles, and excited about young people, teachers, and the inner lives of schools.

PatchWorks Films (www.patchworksfilms.net) is a San Francisco-based production and distribution company making documentaries that explore contemporary social issues via intimate character stories, while forming innovative partnerships with key stakeholders. Our award-winning documentaries have been broadcast worldwide and have screened at theaters, film festivals, schools, universities, museums, libraries and community events. Our last film “Speaking In Tongues” (www.speakingintonguesfilm.info) broadcast on PBS stations across the country last fall, and we are deep into our next film “Got Balz?” (www.gotbalzfilm.info) about a boy’s struggle to donate baseball equipment to kids in Cuba despite the U.S. embargo.

We are seeking an unpaid intern to work in our office (Richmond district, San Francisco) 5-10 hours per week for approx. 6 months, helping us finish our new film and distribute “Speaking In Tongues” and our other titles. There may be some assistant editing work but the majority of the work is assistant producing. This is a great opportunity to learn about the real work life of an independent filmmaker (10% production, 90% producing), while contributing to films that have impact and exposure.

• Generic admin and office duties such as mailing, shipping, filing, and record-keeping

DocuClub in February!

Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Thursday, February 23, at 7p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker).

This month, we will screen a rough cut of "Miracle on 42nd Street" by Alice Elliot. The film documents the unique apartment complex called Manhattan Plaza located in Manhattan’s historic theatre district, a neighborhood also known as Hell’s Kitchen. Located on the block between 42nd and 43rd Streets, it is often called the “Miracle on 42nd Street” due to the near-miraculous effect the complex has had on the once-blighted neighborhood and on the lives of its residents. Seventy percent of the occupants work in the performing arts and thirty percent are Hell’s Kitchen residents who are elderly, disabled or have been relocated from substandard housing. The film tells the story of how this innovative affordable housing experiment came to be, the artists it has nurtured, the close community its residents and management have created and the positive impact it has had on the economy of Manhattan’s West Side. By making this film, the filmmakers want to tell the story of the pioneering people, community leaders, government and business people who joined together to resurrect a blighted neighborhood. Director Alice Elliott is an Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker whose films are dedicated to celebrating the role of community activism in elevating the quality of people’s lives.

Producer Mary Jo Slater was an original tenant of Manhattan Plaza. As a working single mother, she was able to launch a successful career as an award-winning casting director while also supporting the career of her son, actor Christian Slater.

Producer Nancy Perkins lived in Manhattan Plaza in the 1980s along with her actor husband, Ron Perkins, where she began a successful career in casting, rising to become head of casting at Universal Television Studios for fourteen years.

Editor/Producer Lisa Shreve has lived in Manhattan Plaza since the building opened and resides there today, working as an editor of award-winning documentary and narrative films.

Producer Erika Lockridge of Bahr Productions has joined on as a producer because of her belief in the Manhattan Plaza concept of affordable housing.

Producer Cindy Cowan is currently producing the feature "Red Lights" (starring Robert DeNiro).

Our moderator will be Caitlin Boyle. A leading champion of grassroots and community distribution for independent films, Boyle is the architect of national screening and audience outreach initiatives for dozens of feature documentaries, including "King Corn," "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," "The End of the Line," "A Small Act" and "Bag It." Previously on staff at NPR affiliates WFIU and WFUV and PBS affiliate Thirteen/WNET, she is a graduate of Columbia University and the Indiana University Graduate School of Journalism. Her workshops and presentations have rallied filmmakers at SXSW, Hot Docs, Independent Film Week, Sheffield Doc/Fest, the Los Angeles Film Festival, and The New York Foundation for the Arts. She serves on the board of Brooklyn documentary arts center UnionDocs, and on the advisory board of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Research Institute for the Advancement of Cinema Arts and Commerce. Hello filmmakers! My nonprofit is launching a new short (very short... 5 min. and less) film competition on the topic of mental health. The winning film will be used in our education, advocacy and field-building work on college campuses and nonprofits around the U.S., plus win $1,000 award for future work.

I hope some of you will consider putting something together for this. The quality of the work will really determine the caliber of nonprofit partners we can attract, and I know we've got some heavyweights on this list! We already have some pretty major players (national NGOs) interested in using the films in their work – assuming it's well done. In many ways this is about using your film to create positive change through dialogue.

Washington DC-area folks, Docs In Progress has two programs this week:

Thursday, February 9 from 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm at the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Avenue in Takoma Park, MD)
We'll be screening a documentary by one of our alums, Lillie Paquette. WE ARE EGYPT looks at the story behind the story of 2011's Arab Spring. The 85-minute film showcases Egypt’s passionate democracy activists who toiled for years before seeing success from their sacrifice. It is an account of their struggle against extraordinary odds to remove an uncompromising authoritarian regime determined to stay in power. Following the screening, filmmaker Lillie Paquette will answer questions about the film. This is a free community screening and no tickets are required. We'll be offering a special Docs In Progress work-in-progress screening at the Our City Film Festival. This is an opportunity to provide feedback on story and character development to a documentary filmmaker presenting a not-quite-finished version of a film while you also support the festival’s sponsor Yachad, a nonprofit dedicated to affordable housing and community development in Washington DC. The rough cut being screened is Ellie Walton's FLY BY LIGHT which follows a group of DC high school students as they go through a transformational journey in the mountains of West Virginia. Tickets are $10 and can be ordered through Our City Film Festival's website

We'll also be at the Center for Social Media's Media That Matters Conference on Friday and Saturday and hope to see many of you there.

The A&E Unscripted Development Pipeline 
A&E Network and the New York Television Festival are back with the second installment of an innovative program seeking original unscripted television treatments from independent producers and doc production companies. 
 
To submit:
The A&E network is seeking submissions that focus on big characters in exciting and fresh worlds that are highly entertaining and of the moment. Producers must include:
* A short treatment (1-2 pages) describing their original unscripted format
* A brief video (2-4 minutes) introducing the subject(s).
 
Awards:

  • 25 semi-finalists will be presented to A&E development executives. All semi-finalists are invited to participate in the 2012 New York Television Festival, Oct 22-27, as Official Artists (details below).
  • Five finalists, selected by A&E, will receive notes on their projects and $2,500 to shoot additional tape.

Regarding the ad above, I"m curios as to what other people think about this. Although it does seem like an interesting contest, from what I can tell after reading their rules/regulations, it appears that basically by entering the contest you are forfeiting any right to your concept and material and that A&E can basically take whatever they want and don't owe you anything for it. So by doing this contest, they potentially get the rights to thousands of concepts and only have to pay $10,000 to a winner who will be able to "participate" in the production of a pilot but also, from what I can tell, will actually not have any right to their concept.

Also, when one submits cold to Discovery, for instance, you basically have to sign something similar before anyone will look at your stuff. From their point of view, they get thousands of submissions, many for ideas that look pretty similar to each other, and would rather be protected from what they see as reasonable-looking, but actually not, stolen ideas. Particularly if the submitted does not have an industry track record.
