Our next DocuClub screening will take place on Wednesday, January 18, at 7p.m., at DCTV.
This month, we will screen a rough cut of The Great Chicken Wing Hunt by Matt Reynolds. The Great Chicken Wing Hunt follows a band of misfits on a quest to find the world’s best Buffalo wing. It takes a humorous look at the popularity of Buffalo wings, one of America’s most most loved foods, relationships, globalization, and the way trivial things inspire us. It asks the question, are there perfect things?
Director/Editor Matt Reynolds. From 2004 to 2007, he reported on eastern and central Europe for Reuters and The New York Times. Since moving to New York in 2008, he has worked as a film editor. As an assistant editor, he worked under Suzy Elmiger ("Big Night") and the late Karen Schmeer ("Fog of War;" "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control"). In 2001, Reynolds was editor for the launch of NHL Live, a daily talk show on NHL Network, and recently co-edited History Channel’s "Zombie’s: a Living History." "The Great Chicken Wing Hunt" is his first feature as a director.
Producer Elizabeth Mandel has worked for over ten years as a documentary producer and director. Most recently, she directed "Pushing the Elephant," together with Beth Davenport (broadcast on PBS’s “Independent Lens” on March 29, 2011). Her producing credits include "Arctic Son" (Dir: Andrew Walton, broadcast POV 2007), and, as co-producer on Jennifer Fox’s "Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman."
Supervising Editor Mary Manhardt has cut some of the most respected American documentaries of recent years, including "Street Fight," nominated for an Oscar in 2006, and "American Teen" (2008). Her work has won awards at Sundance, Hot Docs, SXSW, Tribeca and IDFA film festivals and aired on HBO, PBS, MTV, ABC, and AMC. Among the films she has edited or co-edited are "Monica & David," "The Farm" and "Camp Victory, Afghanistan."

Are you a filmmaker ready to screen your work in front of new audiences? If so, apply today to be a part of the 2012-2013 Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.
Southern Circuit is the nation's first regional tour of independent filmmakers, providing communities in a nine-state region in the South with an interactive way to experience independent film and engage with indie filmmakers. The tour utilizes an intimate context to connect audiences with filmmakers and connect with films they might not otherwise have the opportunity to see. Films, including animation, documentaries, experimental and narrative work, are submitted for consideration for the Circuit through an annual nationwide open call for submissions.
Southern Circuit is open to any filmmaker living in the United States with a valid driver's license. Filmmakers may submit a feature-length work or a group of short films whose combined time reaches feature length – at least 45 minutes with a maximum of 120 minutes.
The application deadline is Wednesday February 15, 2012. Early Bird Registration ends Tuesday January 31, 2012.

participate in this open conversation about key issues impacting our community.
Moderated by Cinema Eye Nominations Committee Chair Sean Farnel, our goal is to identify some common challenges and opportunities. And, knowing how engaged this community can be, we expect that this discussion will engender great ideas and actions.
The discussion will revolve around several broad topics (Festivals, Funds, Distribution, etc.), though we are also open to submissions. This could be a creative issue, a business issue, a community issue, a master plan, a dangerous idea, a beef, a kudo, a haiku, a manifesto...well, you get the idea. Those selected will be given five minutes to introduce their topic, followed by a moderated discussion and some proposals for next steps.

Hey DC folks, is one of your new year's resolutions to finally check out a Docs In Progress screening?
Join us next Thursday, January 12 at 7 pm with a work-in-progress screening in Washington DC. This program is organized by Docs In Progress and sponsored by The Documentary Center at the George Washington University. After each film screens, we'll be moderating a workshop-style audience critique session. This honest but constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing their films. This screening is open to the general public.

Between 1915-1932, businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald joined with Booker T. Washington to create challenge grants that built schools for poor, rural African-American children at a time when few received any public education in the segregated South.
A Sister's Call (78 minute rough cut) by Kyle Tekiela
Call Richmond disappeared in 1977 and remained missing for 20 years. After Call's sister Rebecca found him homeless and suffering from severe paranoid schizophrenia, she dedicated her life to putting her brother back together. We journey with Call and his family on a roller coaster ride to recovery.

2012 TWN Video Production Workshop – Applications now available
Low cost hands-on training program emphasizing the training and support of people of color and members of marginalized communities. Aimed at working people, the 4 month workshop meets evenings and films during weekends. Limited to 9 participants, students focus on the pre-production, production and post-production skills necessary to take a short project from conception to completion, with training in scriptwriting, research, lighting, camera, sound and editing. Led by film professionals, this 34 year program will begin in early April. The workshop is time intensive and participants must be able to attend regular class meetings as well as meet the out-of-class demands of pre- production, production, and post-production. Prior film, video or related experience is recommended but not required; creativity, self-initiative, time and a collaborative spirit are. The cost of the 2012 workshop will be $600.

Old School Films is looking for volunteer documentary filmmakers to mentor a team of three young students (ages 12-17) in an afterschool filmmaking program.
Each student will make one short film about an elderly person from their community. Students will learn everything from camera operation to interviewing skills, lighting, sound, producing and editing.
Classes meet from 4:30-6:30PM one day a week (either Monday or Wednesday) for 10 consecutive weeks starting in February.

Seeking an enthusiastic FCP editor to take on at least one episode of a limited series doc project intended for public television. If you or someone you know might be a good fit, I'd love to get in touch or hear any and all recommendations!
The Film: "The Times of John McDonogh" (working title) tells the story of the startling bequest to education that a single eccentric millionaire made upon his death in 1850, how that bequest led, by 2006, to the creation of both some of the most blighted public schools and one of the most privileged private schools in the US and how, in the current tumultuous moment in education, each of these disparate schools is now fighting to either re-make itself or protect the things that made it strong in the first place.
Creatively, the aim is to interweave two distinct narrative approaches. First are the stories, told via verite footage, of specific teachers and students at five of the schools that still bear this founder's name and legacy today (two traditional public schools in New Orleans, two more newly-chartered public schools in New Orleans, and one private school in Baltimore) as they live and teach over the course of one pivotal school year. The second is the historical narrative of how these five schools evolved from one man's very specific, utopian vision to such contrasting places along our contemporary spectrum of education. With these two stories intertwined, the twists, turns, and questions raised along the way lead straight through many of the turning points of segregation, political gamesmanship, neglect, and socio-economic inequality that have shaped US schools from the beginning.
Project Status: The wealth of material involved is both blessing and curse. We shot, over the course of the school year we spent in the schools, 300 (!) hours of verite footage of (and interviews with) a select group of teachers, students, and administrators. What's more, there's a rich and surprising array of archival material about the history of the schools to pull from, much of it already gathered together by the production. But there is also a very clear plan. Every inch of the footage is meticulously logged, all of the interviews are thoroughly sub-clipped and labelled, and a paper script outline is in place for the series from start to finish, scene by scene, both for the compelling contemporary characters and the historical narratives, and the ways they might well intermix. We have a work-in-progress-trailer (I can send it to you upon request) and there's a rough assembly of most of the first episode.
What We're Looking For: Over the next five months, our goal is to edit as many episodes of the series as we can manage (at minimum three, with the other three to follow thereafter). Though we could work with someone who could only foreseeably tackle one. To date, all of the editing work has been done by me, the beleaguered, lone gunman producer/director, and while my enthusiasm for the material runneth over, I am neither a very good, nor particularly fast, editor, nor do I have the distance from the material that would probably help the process most at this point. So we're seeking a sharp editor who'd be excited about helping shape this kaleidoscope of specific stories into something awesome. While I'm working on a first-time indie doc-maker's meager budget, I'm not expecting someone to work for free either, so we could talk more about what might make sense for a rate in the short term. Grant writing will soon be in progress. I'm in Los Angeles, and would prefer to work with someone local, though I wouldn't rule out other arrangements. The editor would need their own FC7 system. My hunch is this would not be the right undertaking for a first-time feature doc editor, considering the expansive and interlocking nature of the raw material (not to mention my own green-ness). But someone with a practiced hand and eye would, I suspect, find the way well-paved for a really rewarding collaboration, no ego involved. More than anything, I hope to find someone (this is starting to sound like a dreamy-eyed singles ad) who is passionate about social documentary storytelling, curious about looking at the same subject from different angles, and excited about young people, teachers, and the inner lives of schools.

PatchWorks Films (www.patchworksfilms.net) is a San Francisco-based production and distribution company making documentaries that explore contemporary social issues via intimate character stories, while forming innovative partnerships with key stakeholders. Our award-winning documentaries have been broadcast worldwide and have screened at theaters, film festivals, schools, universities, museums, libraries and community events. Our last film “Speaking In Tongues” (www.speakingintonguesfilm.info) broadcast on PBS stations across the country last fall, and we are deep into our next film “Got Balz?” (www.gotbalzfilm.info) about a boy’s struggle to donate baseball equipment to kids in Cuba despite the U.S. embargo.
We are seeking an unpaid intern to work in our office (Richmond district, San Francisco) 5-10 hours per week for approx. 6 months, helping us finish our new film and distribute “Speaking In Tongues” and our other titles. There may be some assistant editing work but the majority of the work is assistant producing. This is a great opportunity to learn about the real work life of an independent filmmaker (10% production, 90% producing), while contributing to films that have impact and exposure.
