I, Greet Pauwels, am a communications science student at the
University of Brussels. For my dissertation I am conducting a study
concerning the E.U.’s MEDIA Plus program and in particular the
financial support it provides for the development phase in the
production of documentaries.

For this I am looking for people who work in the field of documentary
to fill in a questionnaire concerning both the financing of
documentaries in general as well as the financial development support
provided by MEDIA Plus. But you don't necessarily need any experience
with this program to fill in the questionnaire. Even if you or your
company do not meet up to the conditions laid down by the E.U. as so
that you cannot apply for the program, your input would still be very
welcome. The only requirement for taking part in this study is that
you have to work in the field of documentary.

It is made up out of three parts but it should only take up a small
amount of your time to fill this in and your effort would be more
than appreciated.

Important note: All of the questions, unless when specified
otherwise, only concern documentary projects and the work you do in

the questions.

The final results of my research will be put to the disposition of
the European Documentary Network so my work will also serve a
practical goal. My father, Paul Pauwels from Periscope Productions
and former president of EDN, started a survey last year concerning
the same subject and my research is actually meant to be a more
complete version of it.

There have been some compatibility problems with some people who use
Macs but for them there is now a text version available which you can
dowload to your computer and then email to me. You can find this text
version at the same adres as the on-line questionaire.

Power Trip continues its US theatrical

run in March with openings in Houston,

San Antonio, Sacramento, San Diego

and Ann Arbor.

The premiere of Power Trip in Tbilisi,

Georgia (where it was shot) was a great

success, generating huge buzz with print

and TV coverage. The sold-out screening

in Tbilisi's largest theater was attended by

many of the city's luminaries, including

Georgia's new First Lady.

Power Trip had a special screening

this month for the World Bank's annual

Energy Conference in Washington DC,

where the movie had significant impact

and sparked thoughtful debate about how

development lending policies might be

improved.

There have been other opportunities for special

screenings and we are seeking more.

synopsis

An incendiary mix of documentary, poetry, and storytelling, Every Child is Born a Poet explores the life and work of Piri Thomas, the Afro-Cuban-Puerto Rican author of the classic autobiographical novel Down These Mean Streets (1967). The film traces Thomas* path from childhood to manhood in New York City*s Spanish Harlem, El Barrio, from the 1930's through the 1960*s - his parents* immigrant experience, home life during the Great Depression, membership in barrio youth gangs, his struggle to come to terms with his mixed-racial identity, travels as a teen-age merchant marine, his heroin addiction, his notorious armed robbery of a Greenwich Village nightclub, his six years spent in prison, and his emergence as a writer. Thomas* coming-of-age story is counter-pointed with dramatizations, spoken word poetry performance sequences, and verité scenes of his on-going work of forty-five years as an educator and activist empowering marginalized and incarcerated youths. A stylized, genre-spanning production, Every Child is Born a Poet includes a spellbinding collage of rare archival film footage, still photographs and provocative mixed-media artwork, as it examines Thomas* use of creative expression as a means of confronting poverty, racism, violence and isolation. The National Radio Project (NRP), producer of the weekly show Making
Contact, seeks a highly motivated individual with strong radio
production and journalism skills to join our team as a full-time
Associate Producer.

NRP, a 10-year old, non-profit, independent media group, is
committed to high quality reporting on critical issues while
highlighting voices, perspectives, and solutions not often heard in
mass media. “Making Contact” is currently aired by 160 radio stations
in the U.S., Canada, South Africa, and Indonesia. For more

The Associate Producer reports to and works directly with the
National Radio Project's Director of Production and Training. This
is a detail-oriented job that requires both strong radio production
skills and administrative skills. The Associate Producer’s primary
responsibility is to mix and package the “Making Contact” weekly show.

Responsibilities and tasks include:

Mixing the weekly show, editing audio, arranging interviews,
researching, writing show scripts, and mixing and engineering
reporters’ segments.

Overseeing the weekly post-production checklist: creating show
documents, converting audio for the web, and burning cds.
Coordinating weekly mailings to radio stations with NRP's
administrative department. Managing archival materials and supplies.

Recording, writing, editing, narrating, and mixing in-house segments
on a regular basis.

Working with the Director of Production and Training in the framing
and coordination of “Making Contact” shows.

Assist the Director of Production and Training in the supervision and
development of interns and volunteers.

Qualifications:

* At least two-years experience working in the field of radio
journalism
* Able to work under deadline pressure
* Excellent writing, interviewing, and oral communication skills
* Solid computer and digital audio editing skills
* Strong analysis of policy and current affairs

Considered a plus:

* Ability to speak languages in addition to English
* Familiarity with community-based organizations

CATHRINE ANN JONES is an award-winning playwright &
screenwriter whose films
include UNLIKELY ANGEL (Dolly Parton), THE CHRISTMAS
WIFE (Jason Robards), and
the television series, TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. She co-wrote
the independent film, Angel
Passing(Hume Cronyn/Calista Flockhart), which played at
Sundance then garnered fifteen
awards both in America and abroad. As a New York playwright,

short stories.
She has served on the writing faculty at The New School, UCLA,
and the Esalen

Veterans questioning why they fought. A middle class family trying in
vain to maintain their lifestyle in spite of economic hard times.
Ordinary individuals dealing with fear after acts of violence they
never envisioned could happen to them. We have a lot to learn from
the people of the Balkans. A new film, CRUCIBLE OF WAR, will tell
their stories when it makes its U.S. premiere at the Egyptian Theater
in Hollywood this coming weekend.

CRUCIBLE OF WAR focuses on ordinary people in Bosnia, Croatia, and
Serbia who have survived war, violence, ethnic hatred, and
displacement and are now working to rebuild their lives and
communities. The film's director, Leon Gerskovic is one of those
survivors. Gerskovic will be in town to attend the screenings of the
film, which is being shown in a program of the Artivist Film Festival.

'Other People's Pictures,' set in New York City's Chelsea Flea
Market, showcases nine photography collectors who share an
unlikely addiction - vintage snapshots that have been lost,
disposed of, or sold by their original owners. As our subjects
comb the market, ready to pay anywhere from a few cents to
hundreds of dollars for a single snapshot, they reveal the
experiences of loss and reclamation that fuel their pursuit of
these cast-off images.

An Associate Producer is sought to work with an award-winning video
documentary director/producer on a national public television
documentary program about the future of Americaâ*™s cities. The
program will examine the current national debates over urban and
suburban land use policies, smart growth and regional equity.
Description Assist producer in all phases of the production and post
production, including research for story development, location
scouting, conducting preliminary interviews, locating archival
materials, coordinating production shoots, assisting with the
preparation and completion of scripts, proposals and budgets. Assist
with production planning and logistics. Must be willing to travel.

Skills Required Minimum two years experience working on television
documentary production. Preferably PBS. BA in journalism or related
filed. Good communications, research and writing skills as well a
keen interest in the documentary form. Knowledge of smart growth,
urban planning issues, federal and state urban policies, community
development, metropolitan equity or environmental justice issues a
plus.

Mystic Voices LLC seeks knowledgeable, experienced
person/distributor, representative or agency to help distribute and
obtain broadcast of new documentary Mystic Voices: The Story of the
Pequot War.

What led to the first declared war in American history, waged against
Native Americans? Why has the seldom talked-about massacre not been
broadly presented before Mystic Voices? Why are there so many
differing accounts of this early and brutal event in American history?

Missituck, Connecticut, 1637: In the last hours of moonlight,
Puritans surround a Pequot village wielding swords, torches and guns;
they kill 400-700 men, women and children in one hour. Seldom told,
the 'victory' over the 'heathens' formed Colonial-American Indian
policy for three centuries across America.

The only film on this tragedy presenting viewpoints of historians AND
Native American descendants. Mystic Voices allows participants both
living and dead to speak via their first hand accounts and oral
history, through reenactments and commentary, artwork and music.
Of possible interest for viewers interested in history, anthropology,
sociology, visual anthropology, oral history, religious studies,
Puritan and Native American literature, Indigenous studies, military
studies, archaeology.

THE LAST COLONY - Rebecca Kingsley (20 minute excerpt)
In Washington DC, the capital of the world's best known democracy,
local citizens continue to be denied political rights that other
Americans take for granted -- the right to be governed by their own
locally-elected leaders rather than by the U.S. Congress. This film
looks at the history of Washington DC's unique relationship with the
federal government and its impact on the city's residents.
