UnionDocs is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit documentary arts collaborative and presentation space. Currently, our primary program is The Documentary Bodega Series, featuring new and challenging documentary film and audio works every Sunday evening in our Brooklyn screening room. The series is produced by the Resident Curators of UDR, the UnionDocs Residency Program for Documentary & Media Studies. We also produce a podcast and blog, featuring short media pieces inspired by discussions at the Documentary Bodega and beyond.
UnionDocs is looking for a new resident starting in June. The UnionDocs Residency (UDR) combines an excellent and cooperative living situation with an opportunity for immersion in independent cultural production. Six carefully selected people live together in a historic building at a great location and collaborate to produce a festival-quality documentary series in the first floor screening room.
322 Union is a great place to live. It has a lot of shared resources and a lot of opportunity for fun while also having adequate privacy and a comfort (not always found in NYC communal living). There are three floors, a basement, a grassy backyard with a grill and deck, a big second story porch, and skyline views from the roof. The location is close to excellent transportation making most cool spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn within a short subway ride.
The first floor is a commercial space run by the program director. It includes the screening room, 2 studios for working media artists, the UnionDocs director’s office, and access to the basement which has been sound-proofed for music rehearsal and audio recording. Resources on the first floor are readily available to UD Residents outside of the schedule for the Documentary Bodega Series.
On the floors above, there are two nicely-sized three bedroom apartments with a living room, kitchen and bath. Both have wood floors, get lots of light, and were recently renovated. Bedrooms can be locked, but common spaces are shared by the six residents. One is better for cooking large meals and socializing and the other more appropriate for reading, working, and watching films. The common spaces are furnished, so residents need only bring the contents of their bedroom. The building has high-speed internet, a VOIP phone, and washer and dryer.
About $875/month plus deposit.

Distribution Executive Bios:
Allen Chou is President of Sales and Acquisitions at Passion River Films, a NJ based company that distributes over 300 documentaries, arthouse films, and special interest titles for the US home video and international sales market since 1998. Many of his titles have landed retail shelf space in stores such as: Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster Video, Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, Best Buy, and many more… In 2005, Allen established a distribution partnership with Netflix, resulting in the release of over 180 titles on their site; as well as other retail outlets. Internationally, he has attended Film and TV markets such as the American Film Market in Santa Monica, CA and Cannes Film Market in Cannes, France, where he marketed and licensed films and documentaries worldwide to broadcasters and foreign home video distributors. Recently he started the College Speaker and Public Performance Program; as well as the New Digital Sales and Electronic Delivery division. Allen Chou received his BA in Film from the University Of Maryland, and also attended NYU.
Josh Levin is a film marketing and distribution executive who has brought more than 30 feature films to the US marketplace, including top award winners from Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Berlin, Toronto and Tribeca. As Chief Marketing Officer for Film Movement, Josh learned how to get hard-to-place films in front of the eyes of filmgoers across the country “by any means necessary,” from theatrical premieres in New York City to library screenings in Butte, Montana — while also learning how to get filmmakers paid for their art. Working with films with tiny or non-existent marketing budgets is Josh’s forte. Since starting Gallant Films in 2007, Josh has also begun working in production financing and consulting. Josh got his MBA from Columbia Business School, and his BA from the University of Michigan.

Looking for a videographer/filmmaker to help me film a documentary at the pyramids of Teotihuacan, Mexico in mid-July. I will be documenting my experience in a workshop done at the pyramids on Finding Your Authentic Voice. The featured film is Stages by the Meerkat Media Arts Collective. The film follows a group of older Puerto Rican women and youth of color who unite in New York City's Lower East Side to create an original play based on their life stories.
The Meerkat Media Arts Collective is a New York-based interdisciplinary group of artists dedicated to making media with a non-hierarchical and inclusive creative process. Erica Ginsberg, managing director of Docs In Progress, Inc., a film organization based in Silver Spring, Maryland, will be moderating.
