The first Docs In Progress screening of the new year is less than 2 weeks away. Come join us on Tuesday, January 25 to watch two documentary rough cuts and participate in a moderated feedback session. This honest and constructive feedback is aimed at helping the filmmakers get to the next stage of completing and distributing the film. This program is open to the general public.

WHAT'S SCREENING?

HIDDEN BOOKS by Sam Hampton (30 minute rough cut)
This portrait piece of Kumi Korf explores the lifeforce which inspires art. The Japanese-American artist creates architectural designs, prints, paintings, and artist books which are held by the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the Tate Library, among others. We travel with Korf from her home in Ithaca, New York to her homeland of Japan as we explore the inner life of an artist.

THE LOUDEST SHOW ON EARTH by Mariana Studart (30 minute rough cut)
Giba Gonçalves has built up the Batala Percussion Band from one of the poorest neighborhoods of Salvador, Brazil to a worldwide organization with more than 1,000 drummers in 10 different countries. Regardless of age, gender, nationality, or language, the band plays as one – united by the universal language of music.

Our February DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, February 2, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at

This month, we will screen a rough cut of ONE NIGHT STAND by Elisabeth Sperling and Trish Dalton. The documentary is an intimate, behind-the-scenes journey from the blank page to the live stage, as top Broadway and television writers, actors, and directors produce four original short musicals, all within 24 hours. Think "A Chorus Line" meets "Project Runway" – a window into the creative process with a compressed time frame: the spark, the anxiety, the camaraderie, and the ultimate thrill of expression.

Producer/Director Elisabeth Sperling worked as a producer and writer for Maysles Films from 2005 to 2007. Her work includes HEAD BOY, an exploration of racial boundaries in small-town post-apartheid South Africa; BREAKTHROUGH NEW YORK, a promotional video about an academic enrichment program in New York City; INDIAN VILLAGE, a chronicle of an American family’s visit to their home village in India; and SOMEBODY LOVES ME, a portrait of the Upper West Side’s unique personality. She has a B.A. from Harvard, an M.A. from Columbia, held an endowed chair in the history department at the Horace Mann School, and was awarded Fulbright and Klingenstein Fellowships.

Producer/Director Trish Dalton is an independent producer and filmmaker. Her film credits include KERAS & MANIS (editor; Gold Kahuna from Honolulu IFF, Best Editing Award from Los Angeles Reel FF 2010), WHY ARE WE IN AFGHANISTAN? (producer/editor; Studs Terkel Award for Media and Journalism 2010), 34x25x36 (co-producer; aired on PBS, and was selected by many festivals, including: SXSW, Full Frame, and True/False 2008/2009), FARM SANCTUARY (co-director/co-producer; Media that Matters 'Good Food' award 2007), and TIFFANY'S STORY (director/producer; Tribeca Film Festival 2005). Dalton has also directed and produced a range of pieces for companies such as Amazon, Kashi, Danskin, Pepsi, and National Geographic television.

Our moderator will be Ann Rose, executive producer of original programming at Sundance Channel. She joined the channel in 2004, and since then has overseen critically-acclaimed and crowd-pleasing non-fiction series including the GLAAD award-winner TRANSGENERATION, SIN CITY LAW (from the Oscar-winning producers of THE STAIRCASE), and GIRLS WHO LIKE BOYS WHO LIKE BOYS. She has also pre-licensed and executive-produced numerous documentaries for the channel such as GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN, BEAUTIFUL DARLING, PRODIGAL SONS, and JOHNNY WEIR: POP STAR ON ICE. As an independent filmmaker, she worked on documentaries and TV series for a variety of broadcasters including HBO, PBS, BBC, ARTE, Fox, and USA Network, and directed and produced two short films, LICENSE TO PLAY and BO: THE I CHING AND THE FALL OF THE TWIN TOWERS.

Hey all,

If anyone is looking for an extra hand with putting together their documentary in the New York City area, I would be interested. I am new to the documentary film-making world, and would like to learn more through hands-on experience. I am willing to work for free, and ideally would like to work with a crew that likes to share knowledge about the art and craft of making documentaries.

I am currently working on my first documentary myself, on subway musicians, and I am really loving the experience so far.

DOCUMENTARY DIRECTOR Seeks Producing Partner and Highly Motivated Intern

I am directing a personal film on manhood in the 21st century called MY OWN MAN, shot on super- 16mm film, which was part of IFP’s Independent Film Week 2010 (for a more detailed description of the film and me, see www.myownmanthemovie.com). I have been shooting it over the last three years, and though I’m still in production, I am nearing the phase where I will begin working with an editor to shape the footage into a film. I’m looking for a PRODUCER and an INTERN to assist me through the rest of production and post-production.

JOB #1: PRODUCING PARTNER

I’m looking to find a Producer interested in forming a creative partnership with the director, as well as taking command of all the elements of finding the film financial support and an audience. The Producer should have the following qualities:

•a strong interest in the film’s subject matter
•an appreciation of the specific challenges of personal essay filmmaking
•a gifted creative collaborator
•has proven experience shepherding films through post-production and distribution
•compulsively organized, maniacally efficient, as motivated by the tedium of getting the details right as by talking through the big picture
•willing to work intermittently for deferred pay until funding comes through

JOB#2: INTERN

•researching possible subjects for the film
•locating useful archival footage and pop culture clips
•arranging travel
•(if fluent in FCP) helping organize and prepare footage for editing

This is an unpaid position, with unlimited potential for taking on important responsibilities and receiving substantial credit, depending on the degree of enthusiasm, diligence, and initiative the person brings to the job.

Wonderful office is available for share. The office is clean and large with wood floors, high ceilings, great natural light and central air conditioning/heat. The building is safe and quiet with lots of friendly, creative neighbors on the floor: filmmakers, photographers, etc. Great location, a few blocks from either the 7th Avenue or 15th Street/Prospect Park F stops and lots of great bodegas, cafes, Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc.

Space is available March 1st for short or long term rental. The ideal candidate is someone who works independently or creatively and is not on the phone all day. You'd get a large work space that includes wireless internet, refrigerator and espresso/coffee machine. There is currently an oversized desk, chair and shelves for your use or you can bring your own.

Rent is negotiable, between $200-300, depending on your work schedule so please let me know what kind of work you do and your typical work week--if you have one. Photos upon request.

I am a Swedish filmmaker looking for anyone in New York City whom may have a PAL HDV video camera that I may use for "logging and Capturing" . My HDR-FX-7 PAL video camera just broke down in the middle of logging. I am on a deadline and desperately need to continue. Unfortunately I am all set up for working on a PAL system. I am obviously on the wrong continent ..I know!
I could also, instead use a tape-transfer-deck (but it has to be for PAL). Is there anyone out there in NYC that is working with the PAL system?
I would love to connect.
I will of course pay to rent the equipment and I would need it only for one week.

Our next DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, March 9, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker), New York City.

In March, we are thrilled to try something new, and will screen trailers for documentaries in the early stages of production. This way, we hope to reach out to filmmakers all different stages of production, and not just at rough-cut.

To be considered, please heed the following requirements:

- Project must be in early-to-late stages of production
- Trailer must be 3-8 minutes in length
- Screening format is DVD

Follow young explorer James Graham of Anacostia as he uncovers the hidden lives of urban wildlife, and what their increasing presence in our backyards means for environmental education. As the challenges faced by eagles, osprey, deer, foxes and coyotes are revealed, James begins to uncover why conservation pioneers are increasingly looking at the concrete jungle to teach environmental values.

Romantic longings and romantic realities collide in this heartwarming and heartbreaking program of films and videos by Jodie Mack, Jacqueline Goss, Peggy Ahwesh, Bradley Eros, Matt McCormick, Ben Coonley, Alison Kobayashi and more. This humorous short film features interviews with newlyweds staying in an outrageously furnished hotel in America's honeymoon resort capital, The Poconos.

A love letter from a heartbroken polar bear.

FROM ALEX TO ALEX (Alison Kobayashi, 2006, 6 mins)
In the fall of 2003 I found a letter on the Winston Churchill Blvd QEW overpass. It was labeled, “From: Alex To: Alex.” This is a film based on the contents of that letter.

EROS C'EST LAMOUR (Bradley Eros and Tim Geraghty, 2008, 8 min)
Dorothy's l'amour fou evoked in evanescent fragments unexpectedly encountered. The missing link between Rose Hobart and Maria Montez via Rrose Selavy's bride stripped bare by the song of the sarong.

SYNCHRONIZED FOUNTAIN #2, DUBAI (Peggy Ahwesh, 2010, 3 min)
This is footage of the famous fountain at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai that I shot in April, 2010 when I was there for the art fair. The song is Amvaj (Waves) by Bijan Mortazavi. I made it as a wedding gift for Penny Lane and Brian Frye.

VALENTINE FOR PERFECT STRANGERS (Ben Coonley, 2006, 4 min)
A romantic e-card from Otto, a feral cat seeking love from a stranger on the Internet. Otto edits himself into clips from the 1980’s sitcom Perfect Strangers and asks strangers on YouTube to return the favor.

TYING THE KNOT (Jacqueline Goss, 2010, 2 min)
More risqué than it seems at first, a short ode to marriage.

YARD WORK IS HARD WORK (Jodie Mack, 2008, 28 min)
An experimental animation and mini-musical that wants also to be a romantic comedy. Using various combinations of 2D cut-out and pixilation, the piece follows a pair of newlyweds as they learn the perils of homeownership and life in general.

PEOPLE IN ORDER OF #3: LOVE (Lenka Clayton and James Price, 2006, 3 min)
48 couples arranged by length of relationship. From a series of films about human lives shot while touring the UK in a camper van.

Flicker Flacker Films, a Brooklyn-based documentary film company, seeks an intern enthusiastic about the research and development side of documentary filmmaking.
 
Candidates must be extremely organized and not only comfortable, but detective-like in online and phone-based research. They must have a passion for documentary filmmaking and storytelling. This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to learn more about how to do research both developing and promoting documentaries. This person must have excellent research and writing skills and be comfortable making cold-calls.

Call for Entries for the Aesthetica Short Film Competition!

We're really keen to see short documentaries entered into the competition and last year a documentary film was the winning entry.

The Aesthetica Short Film Competition is an international competition open to all filmmakers, regardless of experience. The winning filmmaker will receive:

- £500 (apx. $800)
- Screenings at a number of established UK film festivals
- Training with Raindance
- Membership to Shooting People
- DVD publication (distributed to Aesthetica's 60,000 readers)
- Editorial coverage in Aesthetica Magazine

The runner-up will also receive £250 (apx. $400) and a shortlist of finalists will be published on the DVD and receive screenings at the discretion of the film festivals involved.

Entry is £15 (apx. $24) per film.

Films should be not longer than 25 minutes long.
