Producers/Collaborators Sought: Doc Film On People Living In Cars

Hi there,

My name is Jeff and I am a first-time filmmaker. I have been filming footage of people living in cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs since last fall. I also live in my SUV and film my experience too.

Not having gone to film school, I am seeking producers and collaborators with filmmaking experience to help transform this footage into an actual film.

Here’s why you should work with me:

-Having worked on a major political campaign, I know how to make and confirm definite commitments with excellent follow though
-I live in my SUV making me all the more able to earn trust among fellow vehicle dwellers
-If I am able to make this film, because I live in my SUV, it will be an amazing underdog story
-I am an emerging YouTube personality. My videos have received almost 13,000 views in just 3 months, with almost 700 YouTube friends and 125 subscribers (I have not lost a subscriber yet). The channel is: jeff4justice
-I have hours and hours of original/unique footage on this topic
-I have researched this topic extensively
-This is a timely topic because of the economic crisis

Here’s what I have filmed:

-6 Interviews of people living in vehicles
-2 Interviews of government workers & elected officials who have been engaged with this topic
-5 interviews with people working in nonprofits serving homeless people living in vehicles
-2 interviews with local residents in neighborhoods with people living in vehicles
-2 interviews with local representatives of neighborhood groups in neighborhoods with people living in vehicles
-1 interview with a police officer
-1 town hall meeting on this topic

All interview subjects signed media releases forms.

I have also filmed various footage of vehicles that appear to be lived in, traffic scenes, and various filler footage.

Here’s where I have filmed:
Walnut Creek, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Venice/L.A. – all in CA

Here’s what I need to film more of:

-2 interviews with women living in vehicles
-2 interviews with families living in vehicles
-More racial/cultural diversity of interview subjects
-More in-depth follow along of 2-3 people/couples/families living in vehicles

Also, I just learned of a lawsuit involving people living in vehicles VS. the city of L.A. regarding laws that outlaw living in vehicles. Footage of the court events would be great too!

A 15 minute clip preview is available.

Like documentaries such as An Inconvenient Truth, Out In The Silence, The Cove, and Food Inc., this documentary has great potential be utilized as a platform for social movement to advocate for safe parking programs (similar to what exists in Santa Barbara and Ventura), the repeal/modification of laws illegalizing sleeping in vehicles, and a network of support for people in this situation.

===Bio===

Rebecca Richman Cohen is an award-winning filmmaker and a law school graduate with experience in international human rights and criminal defense. She interned as an investigator at the Bronx Defenders and continued to do investigative work at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, working on a legal defense team for Alex Tamba Brima in the AFRC-accused case. Five months after leaving the Brima defense team, she returned to Sierra Leone to begin production on WAR DON DON. Between trips to Sierra Leone, she has been adjunct faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where she taught an undergraduate seminar entitled "Human Rights, Mass Atrocity, and Documentary Film" and at American University's Human Rights Institute where she taught "Criminal Justice Stories in Film." Rebecca graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies and with a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. For her work on WAR DON DON she was awarded the the Cinereach Award for excellence in vital, artful storytelling. WAR DON DON also won the Special Jury Prize at the SXSW Film Festival. In 2010 Rebecca was profiled in Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces in Independent Film.

Looking for a Grant Writer

I am producing a Documentary about a Horse Sanctuary in Northern Idaho. As we profile the owner and volunteers at this ranch we touch on issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Autism Spectrum, Foster Care, Economy and the fate of unwanted horses.

I am working on 'Under the Radar' a documentary on the undocumented Irish living in New York. I could do with adivce/help on fundraising options.

'Under the Radar' is a documentary feature that chronicles the lives of the undocumented Irish who immigrated to New York looking for a better life or simply to avoid the unemployment lines back home. It is factual storytelling at its best. It is told from the prospective of three recently arrived Irish immigrants as they navigate their way through a myriad of hurdles in order to stay one step ahead of the immigration authorities. It captures the excitement and disappointment immigrants go through in the Big Apple as they pursue their dreams. It chronicles their fears and aspirations in the wake of 9/11.

Considered one of the best Puerto Rican films in recent years, SEVA LIVES offers a post-modern look at the history and impact of the U.S. invasion and occupation of the island.

When a fictional story reimagining the U.S. invasion was published in a widely-read newspaper in Puerto Rico, its readers believed it as fact. But like the infamous chaos-inducing Orson Welles radio dramatization of the War of the Worlds, the story was utter fiction simply taken as reality. The story contained letters from a historian who unearthed evidence that the United States did not enter Puerto Rico peacefully in June, as history dictates. Instead, the Americans invaded through a town named "Seva," massacred its people, and covered it up by changing the town's name to "Ceiba," its current name.

This story, as the newspaper tried to make clear, is fiction. Yet readers around the island believed it and a scandal ensued.

SEVA LIVES redefines Puerto Rican history in this update of the classic Puerto Rican short story "Seva." It mixes fictional elements with actual archival footage and real interviews with historians to discuss the significance and impact of the short story today. But, most significantly, SEVA LIVES deconstructs the sociopolitical debate of the facts and myths surrounding the history of Puerto Rico and explores the issues that arise when fiction meddles with recollections of the past.

SEVA LIVES is the first film of director, producer and editor Francisco Serano, whose previous credits as a digital animator include Maldeamores, Party Time and Diez en la Música.
