DocuClub in June!

Our June DocuClub will take place on Wednesday, June 22, 7 p.m., at DCTV, located at 87 Lafayette (at Walker).

This month, we will screen a rough cut of SPOILS: EXTRAORDINARY HARVEST by Alex Mallis. This short documentary captures intimate portraits of three New Yorkers on a journey through the culture of dumpster diving, illuminating a practice as old as agriculture. The fly-on-the-wall access to these gleaners offers an unvarnished glimpse into one night of urban harvest. For more info about the film, go to: www.analectfilms.com.

Producer/Director Alexander Ramírez-Mallis is a filmmaker living and working out of Brooklyn, NY. His short documentary, THE DENTIST, was selected to play at the 2011 Independent Film Festival of Boston. His collaborative short, MATTHEW 24:12, won best film and best directing at the 2011 International Doc Challenge at Hot Docs in Toronto. He is an avid photographer and greatly enjoys the darkroom. He is an MFA candidate for Integrated Media Arts at Hunter College (CUNY) and a member of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective.

Our moderator will be Nonso Christian Ugbode, a writer, producer and web/media conceptualist. He works as the director of digital media for the National Black Programming Consortium in Harlem, NY, where he oversees content and style for NBPC's Blackpublicmedia.Org website. He also manages in-house production of content and e-advocacy for NBPC. As a producer and filmmaker his recent works include COLORED FRAMES, a film about black painters directed by Lerone Wilson, currently in distribution and screening at festivals. He received his BFA in Film & Television Production at New York University.

Tonight's event is co-presented with the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective (BFC), a tight-knit community of professional filmmakers in Brooklyn, NY who are dedicated to innovative approaches to filmmaking. The collective comes together through weekly peer workshops to provide sustained feedback and critiques throughout the life of its members' projects. It is the mission of the BFC to inspire groundbreaking films and maximize exposure of the best work from Brooklyn-based filmmakers. Looking for experienced doc shooter in Cleveland or surrounding area

Hello-
First time poster on D-word. Great site.

I work for a PBS doc series based in New York – we’re called “Art21”, and produce profiles on contemporary artists (art21.org, pbs.org/art21.)
I'm looking for a reccomendation for a Cleveland based shooter for a late June shoot we’re doing at Cleveland Clinic. Basically hoping to cover a photography show there – so we’ll be looking to shoot hung artwork (pics behind glass in all likelihood), and the artist moving around exhibit space, interacting with staff/curator.

We’re looking for a doc-experienced, art-friendly DP (HD owner-operator preferable) who we can trust to send out to Cleveland Clinic, deal with talent/location and follow shot list on his/her own (we won’t be sending a producer out.) And most importantly shoot in the Art21 style – think pre-Reality TV, prestige PBS programming style. Thoughtful framings, slow pans, following action or locking off when appropriate, potentially a little dolly work (if time/gear allows.) Overall feel is relaxed, contemplative.

Considered one of the best Puerto Rican films in recent years, SEVA LIVES offers a post-modern look at the history and impact of the U.S. invasion and occupation of the island.

When a fictional story reimagining the U.S. invasion was published in a widely-read newspaper in Puerto Rico, its readers believed it as fact. But like the infamous chaos-inducing Orson Welles radio dramatization of the War of the Worlds, the story was utter fiction simply taken as reality. The story contained letters from a historian who unearthed evidence that the United States did not enter Puerto Rico peacefully in June, as history dictates. Instead, the Americans invaded through a town named "Seva," massacred its people, and covered it up by changing the town's name to "Ceiba," its current name.

This story, as the newspaper tried to make clear, is fiction. Yet readers around the island believed it and a scandal ensued.

SEVA LIVES redefines Puerto Rican history in this update of the classic Puerto Rican short story "Seva." It mixes fictional elements with actual archival footage and real interviews with historians to discuss the significance and impact of the short story today. But, most significantly, SEVA LIVES deconstructs the sociopolitical debate of the facts and myths surrounding the history of Puerto Rico and explores the issues that arise when fiction meddles with recollections of the past.

Organized by Cinema Tropical, this screening celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 7th Robert J. Flaherty Seminar, held in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico.

SEVA LIVES is the first film of director, producer and editor Francisco Serano, whose previous credits as a digital animator include Maldeamores, Party Time and Diez en la Música. Serrano spends most of his time in front of his computer, where he made most of SEVA LIVES. He was born and raised in San Suan, Puerto Rico, and currently lives in Washington, D.C.

I'm seeking an experienced videographer to be a second camera on a shoot taking place this Saturday, June 25th, from about 1 to 3:30. It centers on a September 11-related memorial event occurring in a garden in Inwood at the northern tip of Manhattan. I can't pay much but I'm offering $50 and lots of gratitude. I'm shooting with a Panasonic DVX-100 so I'm seeking someone who owns the same kind of camera, and I'd prefer someone with experience with two-camera shoots. ok im really selling my ex1 kit -chargers, card adaptors and all. the only wear and tear is a very small scratch on the screen that you can only see on bright subjects half an inch long. a year old really in good shape – well loved camera. 3 bats one small 2 big. well well loved.

Life or Liberty by Konrad Aderer, 8 minutes
Shokriea Yaghi copes with the senseless incarceration of her husband in 9/11's aftermath. A Japanese American woman who lived through the WWII camps shares her bitterness and her fears for the future, as immigration law expert Cyrus Mehta and former federal prosecutor Michael Wildes debate the larger context of anti-terror policies. Part of the Call to Media Action series.

Rising Up: The Alams by Konrad Aderer, 11 minutes
See how a Bangladeshi-American family targeted by Special Registration fights back. As part of the Homeland security measures, immigrant men from 25, mostly Muslim countries were required to enroll in a Special Registration program. The result: no evidence of terror, but some 13,000 people are now being deported mostly for expired visas. The Alams were among the many families who believed that voluntarily participating in the Special Registration would show their loyalty. Instead, they face the prospect of breaking up their family, despite a decade of hard work and the raising of two children. Working with DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), the Queens South Asian activist group, the Alams have become activists, organizing to fight for their right to stay. Part of the Call for Change series.

Two Months to Home by Janice Ahn, 8 minutes
In the months prior to 9-11, an Afghan woman named Samira Rahman narrowly escapes from the Taliban, losing her family. After settling down in Long Island and beginning a new one, Samira is taken away by Homeland Security agents in the middle of the night. Her husband Abdul, who runs a coffee cart in South Ferry, and their two young boys await news of her fate.

Dastaar: Defending Sikh Identity by Kevin Lee, 12 min
A restaurant owner beaten. A policeman fired. A 20 year subway conductor born in the U.S., threatened with job loss: All for wearing the signature turbans of their religion, Sikhism. Since 9/11, hate crimes and job losses have plagued the Sikh-American community, whose religion originated in India, and is not even Islamic. In response, the NYC Sikh community has organized to confront the bias and attacks, through legal suits, pressure on city officials and proactive public education. An excellent introduction to an often misunderstood religion and the success of community activism. Part of the Call for Change series.

December 7/September 11 by Ann Brandman & Paul Nishijima, 15 minutes
A comparison of how the events and possible after effects of September 11th may mirror those of the attack on Pearl Harbor. A collection of interviews with Japanese-American veterans who witnessed the events of December 7 in Hawaii offer their insight into what has happened and what might be to come. Part of the Call to Media Action series.

Enemy Alien Sneak Preview at Anthology Film Archives
Join Japanese American filmmaker Konrad Aderer to a sneak preview of his upcoming documentary film Enemy Alien.

Enemy Alien, a first-person documentary, is the gripping story of the fight to free Farouk Abdel-Muhti, a gentle but indomitable Palestinian-born human rights activist detained in a post-9/11 sweep of Muslim immigrants. Told through the eyes of the filmmaker, the grandson of Japanese Americans interned during World War II, this documentary takes on unprecedented intimacy and historical resonance.

As the filmmaker confronts his own family legacy of incarceration, his involvement in the current struggle deepens. Resistance brings consequences: In retaliation for organizing a massive protest from inside detention, Farouk is beaten and locked in solitary confinement, and his American-born son Tarek is arrested in a counterterrorism investigation into the documentary itself.
