LOS ANGELES / NEW YORK – The Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship assists emerging documentary editors by supporting and developing their talent, expanding their creative community, and furthering their career aspirations. In conjunction with American Cinema Editors (ACE) and other partners, the Fellowship, in its third year, offers a wide array of opportunities. The Fellowship is targeted at documentary editors; fiction experience is welcome, though not required.

Past recipients were Erin Casper (“Our School”) and Lindsay Utz (“Bully”).

Awarded once a year, the Fellowship honors the memory of gifted editor Karen Schmeer (“Fog of War”; “Fast, Cheap & Out of Control”; “Bobby Fischer Against the World”), who was killed in a hit-and-run car accident at age 39, on January 29, 2010.

The deadline for the 2013 Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship award is just three weeks away. The ‘received by’ deadline is Friday September 28.

We’re looking for editors who have cut at least one documentary but not more than three. (Our focus on doc editors is new this year.) It’s important that their career focus is editing and not editing-directing or another hyphenate. And they’ll need to be based in the US for 2013. The Fellowship is open to men and women.

The PALEYDOCFEST2012 Pitch Workshop – deadline for entries September 12th

New York, NY—The Paley Center for Media has announced a call for entries for its celebrated Art of the Documentary Pitch Workshop at PALEYDOCFEST2012, which will be held at the Paley Center in New York on Saturday, October 20, 2012. In this workshop/competition—now in its ninth year—a panel of documentary executives and producers discuss the process of developing a documentary and will hear and evaluate pitches from five preselected up-and-coming filmmakers who are hoping to sell either a nonfiction concept or a documentary work-in-progress. The winner of the pitch competition in October will receive a $5,000 grant to be used towards the completion of their project.

This call for entries is to be selected as one of the five filmmakers who will participate in the workshop in October.

Documentary Film Internship Available

Cabin Creek Films, Barbara Kopple's Academy Award winning documentary production company is seeking fall interns to assist us on several feature length independent documentary films.

Duties will include research, logging footage, transcribing interviews, field production assistance on shoots (only if the opportunity arises), running errands, and general admin duties. Having a laptop is helpful, but certainly not required.

We require that interns work a minimum of 2 days/week. Our hours are 11 AM – 7 PM. The internship is unpaid, but we offer a $20/day stipend to cover meals and travel. We are located in Soho in Manhattan.

Looking for a producer in London to help me deal with West End Union licenses (BECTU/EQUITY) for a low budget documentary.

I am in the final stages of a feature doc about an original rock musical that started as a youth workshop in 2008 and has made it all the way to the West End in London.

All London Theatres are unionised and as such we cannot film without prior negotiation and, subsequently, until agreements are in place with the unions and the theatre
I need to start shooting in october but I need to have the agreements in place or at least in process before I fly to London.

Docs In Progress will be taking our popular Work-in-Progress Screening program on the road...to Springdale, Utah which is not only known as the gateway to Zion National Park, but is also home to the Red Rock Film Festival (and D-Word's own Matt Marxteyn).

This is the first time that Docs In Progress is bringing its signature work-in-progress screening program outside of the Mid-Atlantic, giving more filmmakers the opportunity to get this beneficial feedback.

WHO SHOULD SUBMIT?
Are you too close to your documentary? Do you have a rough cut, but need a reality check from someone beyond your circle before you lock picture? Or are you already submitting your film to festivals and wondering why it isn't being accepted? Docs In Progress screenings can give you that reality check with a screening and facilitated feedback session from real audiences.

A FEW IMPORTANT GUIDELINES

Deadline to Submit is October 15. There is no fee to submit.

Submissions must be rough cuts. No completed works or trailers.

Submissions must be documentaries. Both short and feature-length are accepted (maximum length for a feature is 90 minutes).

Filmmaker must be open to feedback on the work-in-progress with the aim of drawing from that feedback to make changes to the final edit of the film.

If selected, the filmmaker must be able to attend in person the screening on Saturday, November 17 between 2:00-6:00 pm. The screenings are scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 17 in Springdale, Utah (just outside of Zion National Park, about 45 minutes from St. George, UT or 2 1/2 hours from Las Vegas, NV).

If selected, travel to the festival would be at the filmmaker's own expense although the festival may have some discount arrangements with local hotels and will provide filmmakers a festival pass and access to the Closing Party.Filmmakers will be notifed of acceptance by October 26 to allow adequate time to make travel arrangements.

Wonderful office is available for share. The office is clean and large with wood floors, high ceilings, great natural light and central air conditioning/heat. The building is safe and quiet with lots of friendly, creative neighbors on the floor: doc filmmakers, photographers, etc. Great location, a few blocks from either the 7th Avenue or 15th Street/Prospect Park F stops and lots of great bodegas, cafes, Prospect Park, Celebrate Brooklyn, etc.

Space is available November 1 for short or long term rental. The ideal candidate is someone who works independently or creatively and is not on the phone all day. You'd get a large work space that includes wireless internet, refrigerator and espresso/coffee machine. There is currently an oversized desk, chair and shelves for your use or you can bring your own.

Rent is $300, and somewhat negotiable depending on your work schedule (nights, weekends, days, etc) so please let me know what kind of work you do and your typical work week--if you have one.

I'm looking for a talented director/shooter/editor or small doc team in Paris! I'm looking for someone, or some folks who ideally, who have (or have access to) a 5D or an HD video rig to do a short piece for us here at Etsy. We publish a 3-4 minute doc short every other week to the web, and this one would require someone (or some folks) with not only a strong eye, but a sense of humor, to boot. This would be a portrait of a maker ... of an unusual sort!

National Dance for Obama is a multi-city flash mob happening in 20 major cities across the country at the same time TOMORROW. The flash mob starts at 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST/12 p.m. PST/11 a.m. AKST/9 a.m. HST sharp and lasts less than 3 minutes. Shooting would involve getting some wide shots, closeups and some reaction shots, and possibly talking to some participants. Therefore, the commitment is no longer than about 30 minutes tomorrow (Saturday, 10/13/12). The “LSD” Fernanda will be discussing stands for Loglines, Synopses, and Demos. During this full-day workshop at the George Washington University’s Media and Public Affairs Building, you will learn how to best represent your project verbally, in writing, and with audiovisual material to potential funders and distributors. I would urge anyone visiting my site to read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy page, which states our stance on copyright issues.

which states:

"DocumentaryON.com understands the issues surrounding International copyright law and is focused on keeping to that law. DocumentaryON.com respects what copyright law stands for. As all videos are embedded from external and unrelated websites, DocumentaryON.com does not have the power to remove media from the internet, however DocumentaryON.com is always willing to remove said material from DocumentaryON.com and its related websites. DocumentaryON.com does not actively review embedded content, but will remove videos, images and content upon request."

Just to clarify, there is no video material on our server space. No one from DocumentaryON has uploaded material to the internet which breaks copyright law.

All videos on documentaryON are embedded, and can be found on places such as youtube.

I really can understand your frustration, and documentaryOn's purpose is to open peoples eyes to the truths of the world. Not to rip off hard working individuals.

I think this is exactly where the problem is, Greg – filmmakers are not inclined to trust someone whose policy is to share filmmakers' work without asking first – your "terms of use" might sound pseudo-legal but does not absolve you of responsibility.

You might fare better if you consider rewording your policy to something like "DocumentaryON.com actively reviews all links to avoid copyright violations" – in other words a curated site which selects legally cleared content.

Also, your website has no "real world" contact details, just a web form – why is this if you are a legitimate outfit?

A good model that you might be interested in is the Distrify platform http://distrify.com/

I will take an in-depth look into the Distrify Platform you have suggested, on first view it looks very interesting.

Our contact page is a way of reducing spam and nothing else, as we have found that spam software can crawl web pages and extract the info.

I do find it some what confusing that James Longley who commented above, has chosen to upload his own material to a website which gives anyone the ability to legally embed this content anywhere else on the web, of course this is all stated within their policy and terms of use.

As I am sure you are aware, embedding acts as a window through a website, giving the ability to view content from another. The original copyright issue is held within the place of origin. It is the originators lawful responsibility to monitor and remove this content.

I would like to reiterate, I am not looking to upset, annoy or breach anyones liberties.

New ways to improve our service and experience will always be looked into. And in most cases implemented.

You have given some valid feedback, and I thank you for that.

Hey Greg,
The whole point here is that you want filmmakers to be your friends. Anything that alienates them – no matter if they've actually authorised content to be on the platforms from which you're embedding or not – won't help you.
It doesn't hurt to ask first. Just be nice cause it's nice to be nice. :-)

Not to get too embroiled in the legal aspects of this question, but my impression is that other sites, like The Pirate Bay, also did not host the content on their own servers. This fact did not protect them from prosecution.

As you know, large film studios hire firms to actively police the internet and flag cases copyright infringement. Independent filmmakers usually don't have the resources to do this: When I find one of my films posted on YouTube or elsewhere I have to personally fill out all the forms to have it removed, only to have it pop up again in a few weeks. Being in Afghanistan, where YouTube is blocked, makes it temporarily impossible for me to remove illegal copies of my films from that site.

Just because you find a film on YouTube or some other site doesn't mean that the filmmakers have given permission for it to be there. The only way to be sure the content on your site is legitimate is to have written permission from the copyright holder. Just assuming that if it exists on the Internet it must be fair game is extremely problematic, and could get you into trouble, both on a personal level with filmmakers and possibly with their lawyers or their distributors' lawyers.

We don't want to knock you for your enthusiasm for documentary, Greg, but you did say at the very start "any feedback would be massively appreciated". The D-Word is a Community of independent documentary filmmakers, not a large faceless corporation. If you are serious about engaging with filmmakers, you might reflect on the comments here rather than simply copy/pasting your "terms of service".

Greg, have you asked permission of filmmakers to post any of the documentaries on your new site? Without asking permission first you skipped an essential step. By skipping this step you and your colleagues have taken away potential income producing opportunities for the filmmakers (i.e. sale of DVDs and downloads from their own sites or their distributors' sites); plus you have opened up their work to be copied and passed around. You may believe your site is "homage" to great documentaries ~but that is naive. Before filmmakers have to go through all of the trouble to ask their films be removed why not simply gain their permission first? Why does the burden of requesting their own work be removed have to be placed in their lap?

I'm selling some audio gear, because I own too much stuff
- Audio Technica At4073a shotgun with a Rode camera mount---$400
Great shotgun for on camera, it sounds great, it color less the off axis than 416, it's shorter that most shotguns in the market, less noise floor than Sanken cs1 and it has very hot output, so you don't crank your preamps of your camera too much what means you have less hiss in your audio. I'm first owner, it shows some little wear (the grid is totally perfect) but works great.
- Two lavaliers Sennheiser Mke2, this standard lav in broadcast TV. One shows its age, but sounds perfect, thw second one is in great shape. The old one $100, the better looking $150
If somebody wants everything, I take $600 for shotgun, mount and two lavs.
You can ask around D-word, other people have bought sound stuff from me before.

Located on the Italian Riviera in the village of Bogliasco, The Bogliasco Foundation provides one-month residential fellowships for qualified international artists and scholars in the following disciplines: Archaeology, Architecture/Landscape Architecture, Classics, Dance, FILM/VIDEO, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Theater, and the Visual Arts. Previously awarded Film/Video projects have encompassed all styles (fiction, documentary, animation, installation, new media, etc.), formats, and phases of production. All Fellowships include free room and board and a separate studio space.

To be eligible for a Fellowship, applicants should demonstrate significant achievement in their disciplines, commensurate with their age and experience. Bogliasco Fellowships are not awarded to students currently in a degree-granting program. Deadlines for the submission of applications are as follows: January 15, 2013, for residencies during the fall-winter semester beginning in September 2013 and April 15, 2013, for the winter-spring semester beginning in February 2014.

Hello all!

I know of a feature-length documentary that will be screening on Wednesday, December 12 at 7:00pm in Hollywood. Filmed in 18 countries across all 7 continents, the 80-minute documentary explores how the airplane has changed the world.

The film is nearing completion, and the filmmakers are looking for a general audience to provide some feedback. It's important that the audience members are truly "general," and not filmmakers or aviation enthusiats, but at least interested in watching documentaries.

I am renting out my work/live loft in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. It comes fully furnished along with my editing system, so a great space for someone who wants to come to New York and edit for a while. It is available from the dates 12/19/12 – 1/17/13 and i am willing to rent it out by the week.

Price is $700 per week or $2000 for the entire duration. It is a large 1100 sf loft with a small bedroom attached and 13 foot ceilings. The neighborhood is nice and very close to the subway.

My editing system is Mac Pro Tower 2010 with a 29 monitor and 20 inch monitor. Includes Final Cut 7

I think this is a very good deal for such a nice space and I'm looking for someone trustworthy to rent it to.
