I'm on Firefox 3.0.4 on XP and can't reproduce your problem. I'll notify Peter. In the meantime, consider updating your browser...?

Peter Gerard
Wed 3 Dec 2008Link

I agree, the best thing would be to move up to Firefox 3. I recently trouble-shooted several friends' PCs and they were using Firefox 2 and Win XP and could no longer access some websites. This appeared to be after a recent upgrade in Firefox, which judging by the release dates was 2.0.0.18. Upgrading to the current version of Firefox 3 fixed the problems.

Mark Barroso
Wed 3 Dec 2008Link

Interesting. I just clicked on "check for updates" and it said there were none available. Maybe they're just not available to ME. I'll go to the website. Thanks for the tip.

Mark Barroso
Wed 3 Dec 2008Link

This is a test of the Firefox 3.0. Damn, it worked! You guys are gods. I wonder why 2.0 never told me there was a 3.0 update. Perhaps that's why there is a 3.0. Thanks everyone.

Peter Gerard
Wed 3 Dec 2008Link

For some reason Firefox 2.0 just checks for updates along the 2.0 line and it probably updated itself 2.0.0.18 which is what I'm guessing caused your problems... It is strange that they wouldn't automatically encourage people to upgrade to 3.0...

It's annoying to have to type in my full login every time i check out the site. I don't know too much about cookies and all that, but Safari remembers my login info for most sites- any way I can do that with d-word?

Marj Safinia
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

Yes, especially for those of us who are iPhone users too. I like to look at D-Word on my phone when I'm waiting somewhere, or have time to kill out and about, and it's a real drag from that perspective. Fancy designing a D-Word iPhone app, Peter? :)

Ari Mark
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

Where can I post a production question?

Christopher Wong
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

a few things mark...

1) you should ask production questions here: Mentoring Room
2) the "Help" section is only for technical issues with this site
3) you should sign up with your full name (not just "Mark A")

good luck with your postings!

Ben Kempas
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

Any browser should be fine remembering the D-Word login when asked to do so. It works fine for me.

Liz Witham
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

You can tell FireFox to remember your login and it will auto-fill.

Andy Schocken
Wed 10 Dec 2008Link

Ok- got it. If anyone's wondering, go to safari prefs > autofill, make sure "user names and passwords" is checked. Then, when you login, it will ask if you want your information stored.

In reply to Marj Safinia's post on Wed 10 Dec 2008 :

If you want to buy me an iPhone I'll make an iPhone version!

James Longley
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

I also liked checking D-word on my iPhone, back when I was living in an iPhone-data-compatible country.

Actually the big problem with D-word on iPhone is that it tends to hang and crash the iPhone browser. I've noticed that certain sites do this on the iPhone, and certain sites work fine and never crash. Of course, there have been some iPhone software updates since I last checked this.

Marj Safinia
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

still happens. And I often end up accidentally striking the "hide this topic from now" link instead of the "back to topics list" link. And I hate that everytime it crashes I have to type in my login again.

Facebook's got a pretty decent iPhone app. Different from the site, but pretty solid on the phone. Makes me jones for a D-word version too.

James Longley
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

Well. Maybe we iPhone / D-word people should all pitch in for a phone for Peter.

Peter Gerard
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

We had discussed a mobile version before but were not sure there was a big demand. Maybe the iPhone is changing that.

Not that I can test it (yet...), but what actions make it crash on the iPhone?

James Longley
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

Nothing in particular. If you just go to the D-word site and do nothing it has a tendency to crash. Sometimes even before you get a chance to log in. Sometimes it crashes sooner, sometimes later, but it always crashes if you stay on the site for more than a few minutes.

I assume there have to be some coded operations taking place in the background of the site that cause this, because it can happen while the site is just sitting there, without any user action. Sometimes it becomes VERY slow on basic operations like text entry and then crashes.

Maybe borrow somebody's iPhone and take a look?

Peter Gerard
Sat 13 Dec 2008Link

I'll do that later this week and see if I can figure out what's going on.

Rebecca Alvin
Wed 31 Dec 2008Link

This is not a big deal, but my profile says I joined in 2005, when actually I joined back in 2001. Is there any way to fix that? (Just in case some day there is a special 10-year anniversary party or something)
thanks.

Ben Kempas
Thu 1 Jan 2009Link

Maybe 2005 was when you first posted on the New Café? You are listed as 2005 there.

Why does it matter anyway? Any member can come to an anniversary party.

Doug, Ben

Which of the various topics would be best to post in about 'green' filmmaking? Or might it make sense to have a separate topic? [Perhaps it's there already, but I haven;t found it yet....]

Doug Block
Fri 9 Jan 2009Link

That's a really good question, Andrew. You might want to start out talking about it in the Bar and see if there's enough interest to open a seperate topic.

Doug, I posted my film treatment under works in progress. But now that I think about it. I don't really want it posted for everyone to see and take. Just at such an early stage I now realize it's a bit foolish to throw an idea like that out there. Can you remove the posting?

Does the D-Word have one of those mini-apps that lets you size and crop the photo that gets used as your thumbnail? I thought I did this before, but went to do it on a new photo and could not find it.

James Longley
Sat 21 Feb 2009Link

I would also like to be able to do that. This thumbnail photo doesn't show my halo.

Erica Ginsberg
Tue 3 Mar 2009Link

Dumb question about the Reelisor topic. I notice that Ben and Doug are posting in it, but posting privileges don't seem to be extended to the rest of us. Or maybe you have to be a Reelisor member? It's not clear. Not that I have anything really to contribute to the topic. Just seems like it would be more used by D-Worders if we could actually post there since it appears no Reelisor members (other than the organizer) seem to be posting there. Maybe it's just been a soft rollout. Anyway, just wondering...

Ben Kempas
Wed 4 Mar 2009Link

Strange. It was set to allow postings from 19 January. I deleted that setting. Can you see a text box now?

What do D-Worders and hosts think about starting a "Social Media" separate topic thread to cover issues using Facebook, Twitter, etc. & whatever new forms will arise? Social media may span different topics (marketing, distribution, fundraising, etc.), but I know some D-Worders are starting to use social media with varying results.

Ben Kempas
Tue 16 Jun 2009Link

Well, The D-Word was never designed for mobile phones. But it runs fine on mine (Nokia E90). However, we could do a poll and see how many people want a streamlined version with less data load for their phones.

Mikal Jakubal
Tue 16 Jun 2009Link

The data load is fine. Actually, D-word is one of the faster loads at home on my slow connection. It's just the typing deal that is the problem.

Marj Safinia
Fri 19 Jun 2009Link

I used to have that problem, but I'm not aware of it any more. Have you done a iPhone software update Mikal? That might help.

Mikal Jakubal

Latest iPhone upgrade seems to have fixed it.

Just wondering if the category "Video Essay" has any traction? Not 'documentary' in the purist sense. I'd call the docu-drama sections of the video I'm working on "documentation of the future".

John Burgan

This topic is for questions about The D-Word, David- but FWIW, "Video Essay" is fine – although it might not ring everyone's bell.

David W Grant
Thu 25 Jun 2009Link

Hi, John, Hope to see you at Folklife Festival. I'll be there mid-day Saturday. Will you?
I thought this section was also for 'ideas for future D-Word ... projects' ... such as attention to video essays. Where, then, would that suggestion best be made?

John Burgan
Thu 25 Jun 2009Link

Your question could have gone in Developing Stories or Works in Progress

I was briefly at the festival today, off to NY tomorrow but back early July, maybe see you then...

Hello. I am new to D-word and have just been employed by National Geographic in Washington as a Producer/Director. I live in New York and commute to D.C. thanks.

Celia, I highly recommend Charles Whelan Insurance Agency. Chuck works out of Washington State but handles my liability insurance. He's great to work with and gets good rates. Can't hurt to say I referred you:

Just to remind people again, this Help topic is about The D-Word platform, not about help with documentary questions... :-)

Mikal Jakubal
Tue 28 Jul 2009Link

Here's a little bug, Peter, in case you don't already know about it. Underscores at each end of the word italicize the word, but it doesn't work to try to italicize part of a word. E.g. to highlight a difference in emphasis such as "_re_volution vs. evolution." It renders with the underscores instead of "re" being italicized.

Peter Gerard
Tue 28 Jul 2009Link

I suppose that is by design... The underscores to italics feature is part of an open-source text-processing plug-in we are using, and the rules are designed to work in most cases while ideally not breaking special formatting (such as urls). If we made it always italicise characters between 2 underscores, we could make some mistakes, which is why the feature is designed to only italicise if there are spaces around the underscores. If you've followed discussion here about the strikethrough feature you'll see why it could cause problems to allow formatting of partial-words.

Nikia Furman
Tue 28 Jul 2009Link

I'm working on an outdoor sport documentary series, my second series actually. Both have been for non-profit organizations, so often no permit is required by the US Forest Service, US Parks, BLM, Etc. However, some representatives will flat out refuse to give a permit- say for following 1 person through a wilderness area with a small camera and tripod and two crew members. I have three frustrations with the process- 1. Responses are inconsistent- sometimes yes, sometimes no. 2. There are no rules that apply to non-profit- they only talk about commercials where there are paid talent or products being sold, and 3. Isn't that a violation of free speech to say you can't document someone's experience?

Ben Kempas
Tue 28 Jul 2009Link

Nikia, this topic is for questions with our discussion software. Your question could go into topics like Directing , Production , or the Legal Corner .

okay, so I couldn't figure it out. Once I've clicked on "People", I have only "search". If I click the upper 'search' button without entering any info, I get 'advanced search' option, but then I'm not on the 'people' page, but have a list of topics to choose from.
