Hello, I'm Jennifer. I've been working on a documentary about my sister for the last 10 years. She is developmentally disabled and a fascinating subject. Right now we're collaborating on a video blog to foster discussion and interest in the project. I've worked in Film, Comedy and Video Games since graduating from UCLA. Some of the films that inspire me: Genghis Blues, The Sound and the Fury, Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, The Cruise.

Hi All:

I have joined D-Word as an “Enthusiast” because, frankly, I have an idea for a Documentary film, and a (small) amount of seed money should I find a filmmaker with a shared vision. My idea was born from a life which, for the past several years at least, has been dramatic. I started my search for a filmmaker at the top, by contacting academy award nominees/winners from the past several years. That effort bought me almost an hour on the phone with Ross Kauffman (an award winner) and a request for my book from two others who had been nominated. This is the (form of the) email which generated that interest:

"I am a former Manhattan attorney and a registered sex offender. Through a book I wrote about my crime [SEE 1 AND 2 AND 3 and other efforts, I am attempting to offer a perspective on this highly-charged issue which I believe society ignores to its detriment. The roadblocks have been enormous.

As a documentary filmmaker who explores social issues, if there were an approach for a film on sex offending which is worthy and unique, would you spend a few moments of your time? If you would, I’d love the opportunity to share with you some thoughts I’ve developed as a result of life experiences I never dreamed possible."

Though not impossible that I’ll “get the call” from one of them, I didn’t need to be told that their options are vast. So, I figured I’d be proactive again and post this to see if any filmmakers who’d like to be nominated for an academy award may be interested. There’s a lot more story to tell. Even if not, suggestions on how to contact a filmmaker who may be would be appreciated.

I'm thrilled to have discovered The D-Word via Doculink.

I am a longtime fan of the doc form. But after an initial foray into doc work after college, I took a 20 year detour into public radio, working as a producer for NPR News. I am excited to get back to my original goal and am now actively seeking to apply my journalism and storytelling skills to the doc world, specifically editing.

I am a recent grad of the Tech Center's Art of Editing class (Hi Rachel!) and loved working on the doc project there, Sally Rowe's film about New York chef, Paul Liebrandt.

I am now seeking editing projects in the LA area. I hope to meet and share info with more of the D-Word members. Thanks!

why do I feel that James will not be around for long? James, maybe it's different in a lawyers' world (shan't speak for the other world you claim membership in) but people are not highly appreciative of someone coming into a club and claiming to want to speak only to those who might have won the top award in the industry or offering others the chance to do so with your help. Here we tend to respect and honour all our members and their achievements and take an interest in one another without first checking their claims to fame. And, of course, I speak only for myself.

Sorry, David, no disrespect intended (I can assure you I'm probably one of the last people in the world who'd go around disrespecting others). My intention was simply to underscore how inspired and motivated I am in wanting to undertake what I believe to be a worthy project. And, of course, ANY interest by ANY body else in one's ideas helps to keep that inspiration going. Obviously when that interest comes from someone who has already shown some ability to pick and choose topics that others appreciate, then that particular person's interest adds just a little more "juice" (if you will) to one's own energy.

I continue in my desire to collaborate with anyone who, as I said before, may share a similar vision and have the expertise that I lack.

Hello everyone. I'm a videographer/editor. My professional background involves shooting/editing footage of George Lucas for the behind-the-scenes docs for the Star Wars franchise at Lucasfilm Ltd. for 2 years, and then shortly after that I worked for a small division of FOX producing similar behind-the-scenes and news content for the videogame industry at IGN Entertainment (ign.com). I recently finished my first feature-length documentary, Rabbit Fever (www.rabbitfever.com). I'm so glad to have found this forum!

Hi all – I just finished working as production coordinator on Participant Media's doc "Countdown to Zero" and looking to connect with more fellow doc filmmakers. After going to Sundance this year, i was VERY impressed with the quality of docs being produced these days (and proud to contribute to it in my own small way). I'm also a DP, and recently shot a feature doc about the effects of music programs on academic achievement in the LA public schools. I look forward to participating in the discussions here and learning/sharing more.

Hi everyone- Film is a second career, and though I've been working at it for ten years – still have LOTS to learn!! I just finished the short "Only One Boss" which will premier at Aspen Shortsfest in April. I co-produced "At Home in Utopia" which was broadcast on INdependent Lens on PBS in 2009 and I co-directed "Dental Farmer" which played at Black Maria Film Festival and Chlotrudis and others in 2001. I am looking for a distributor for "Only One Boss" a nine-minute film about relationships and power sharing. It stars a couple of kids who fight and make up and fight again at ages 2, 3, and 12. I would love to meet others who make short films. Glad the D-word is here.
