Thanks for having me in this great community of filmmakers! I am in the process of making my first (documentary) film, which I have been working on for several years solo. I am at the point of getting serious about it – shifting from having lots of footage to creating a story line, working with other experienced people, and completing it and getting it seen.
I know I will have lots more questions in the future. But what's on my mind right now is how I best to work with an experienced editor/producer whom I have found to make sure everything is kosher. What kind of agreements should I have in place and how to transfer files in a way that protects my ownership of the footage? If there's a place I should look in past posts, please let me know.

Hello. My last stop through was several months ago, so I am saying hello again. I am based in DC, and working on a project in Philadelphia, so I look forward to some face to faces in those cities. Hi everyone! I'm proud to be in the company of talented people who utilize filmmaking to bring important messages to the world.
This year has been a special one for me – where I've dedicated my time and money to a non-profit feature-length documentary about the Japan earthquake and tsunami ("Pray for Japan").
I've learned a lot in the process and now have to deal with getting the film out there – which is overwhelming. I'm sure I will learn even more on this site – which I had joined it 8 months ago!

Hello! I am a documentary filmmaker based in Rome. I am developing a new project with a small company called Tailsfilm Production which looks at the relationship between access to energy and poverty in the developing world through the work of a mechanical engineer who has invented a cooking stove that is also a tiny portable refinery. His aim is not to sell stoves but to help set off a process through which millions of people can become self-sufficient (and carbon negative) in energy terms. We may need to work with stringers through the development process to gather material from a range of countries in Africa and Central America.
A little about me: I was born in Italy but grew up in New York City, where I started working in the mid-80s correcting proofs for The Nation magazine. I then moved to London for a Master's degree and stayed for ten years working on documentaries mostly for Channel 4 until 1999. I then returned to my roots and have been based in Rome, making films mostly in co-production and with the support of the EU's MEDIA Programme since. I work as a freelance producer, writer and executive producer while developing my own projects. I was most recently executive producer for Gustav Hofer and Luca Ragazzi's documentary Italy: Love it or Leave it (www.italyloveitorleave.it). I have just come back from the Italian Doc Screenings in Florence where Fernanda Rossi gave a workshop and talked to us about how useful the The D-Word could be especially in the development stages of a film on global themes, so here I am.

Hello from Maine, everyone. I work on documentaries when not at my day job (which itself is also a lovely pursuit), right now am in early production on a film with/about the Somali immigrant community here in southern Maine, and the story of one young man's political ambitions in particular. The film is about Chris Schoeck, an introverted, small statured man, who is training to become an olde-time strongman. I am Eric Gulliver, an editor and graphic designer currently living in Boston, Massachusetts. I currently work as an assistant editor for FRONTLINE over at WGBH. I recently finished work as a co-producer and cinematographer on my first feature length documentary entitled Peace and the Quiet (www.peaceandthequiet.com) with fellow D-Worder Beth Balaban. I am pleased to be a part of this non-fiction community and hope to contribute to the various post forums in the future!
I'm back on the D-word after an absence of two years. What happened in those two years? I was let go of my tenure track University teaching position. Honest I had students that liked me but the lazy ones gave me poor student reviews which led to a non renewal of contract. What is even more strange, I was hired because I have a MFA in documentary filmmaking but I was never assigned to teach any film classes. Instead because of my animation skills I was assigned to teach graphic design. Which I had to dust off old art skills.
I began painting and have gotten into the Artists of Hawai'i Art show 2009 and 2011 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Anyone who is an artist of note and lives in Hawai'i has been in this show.
The most important thing is I decided to finish my feature length documentary, "Alan at Work" which is on Indiegogo. DO a search for it. The campaign expires January 24 2012 and I am no where near my funding goal.
I spent the summer of 2010 logging all the footage- about 50 hours worth. Then life intervened and I got back on the project summer 2011. I hired Fernanda Rossi, the documentary doctor and she saved my documentary. I will send her my latest cut and hope for the best. I was open to any direction she gave me. If she thought it was a short, I would have made a short. She said the documentary was at least an hour long and after story editing- the length was 56 minutes. I found footage and added back a few scenes following her structure. Now the length is 80 minutes which I will cut down to 70.
I’m new to the D-Word, new to the world of documentary filmmaking, and I have a ton of questions. I’ll confine this post to question number 1 but first a few words of introduction.
I’m a writer in Los Angeles, working in collaboration with a veteran European filmmaker on the development of a doc film project that’s been accepted into IDA’s Fiscal Sponsorship Program. On page one of the FSP Agreement it says that as Project Manager I’m required “to obtain appropriate liability insurance for all aspects of the project in an amount of not less than $1,000,000, which shall name IDA as an additional insured.”
I’d like to ask folks with experience in this area where I should (and maybe also should not) go to inquire about such insurance, how much I should expect to pay, if there are some plans better than others, etc. Any and all information will be appreciated.

Due out in 2012 in an anthology entitled "Film and Genocide" will be my interview with Polish filmmaker Irek Dobrowolski as well as an essay I wrote about Irek's award-winning Holocaust documentary "The Portraitist." I was so excited to find this community! I'm currently a Grad student at Southern Illinois University, in Carbondale, studying Digital Documentary. SIU is also where I spent my undergrad years in the early 90s. I'm currently working on my first doc, "Jake and Janie", a story about family, and gambling addiction.

A little about me:
As I mentioned above, I was here in Carbondale once before as an undergrad in the Radio/TV department.
I moved out west after graduation and instead of diving into the world of television, I ended up in the exploding world of E-Commerce, working for companies like eToys and Ticketmaster. It was a great ride (I ended up in London for a year!) However, as life moved on, I wanted to make my way back to my passion, which is telling great stories.
While I am focused on filmmaking, my former life in the online world is still with me. I work in the Marketing department at the SIU Student Recreation Center, focusing on their social media marketing efforts. I'm also one of the co-founders and VP of Social Media Club Southern IL, a professional networking group.

I need advice for presenting best storyboard content as many possible target markets can be reached.
My original concept was a 30 minute MTV or Adult Swim style gag humor show but could also reach markets for education and has movie potential.

I'm French-American based between Paris and New York (mostly Paris for the last few years).
I'm going to Houston on the 24th of January for 2 weeks to do a research/trailer trip on a documentary about women who fall in love and marry prisoners who are either on death row or sentenced to life without parole. I am particularly interested in the dichotomy between these love stories and a judiciary system that is not built on rehabilitation or redemption, and does not encourage social reintegration. I am hoping that these love stories will allow for a greater reflection on forgiveness and reinsertion, in contrast to a prison system that is often times built on a vicious and violent cycle from which it is difficult to break.
An integral part of the film will be the weekly radio program called the Prison Show (recently profiled on NPR's All Things Considered), which, as its name indicates, is a radio show that discusses the Texas criminal justice system. It's a fascinating show, which has listeners who call in and leave messages for inmates, hosts and airs weddings by proxy, among general conversations about death row and prisons in Texas.
I'd love to meet any Houston doc filmmakers while I'm in town, or hear about anyone's experiences filming in prisons. Also, I'll probably need a PA for a couple of days work (paid), so if anyone has any advice on any of these fronts, I am open to all suggestions.

I've filmed inside 5 different prisons in NY and FL, so here's my two cents: All prison officials – kiss ass, kiss ass, kiss ass. In addition, be nice to guards who are jackasses. (You can win an Oscar for this!) Make sure you let the person who grants you access, (public affairs or warden), know it's not your intention to make the prison look bad, (even if it's a hellhole, which most prisons are). Keep this same person informed about what your project is about and how it's evolving. Filmmakers are a bureaucratic pain-in-the-ass for prison officials, and also a security risk. Also, you might want to do a kiss ass interview with the warden if he or she is willing.

I live in the Baltimore/DC area of Maryland. I switched careers from academia to video back in 2006, a few years after I finished a dissertation on TV war reporting and public opinion formation (where I taught myself to edit video).
I thought news and documentary video was a cool way to show people how the world worked (or wasn't working). I remembered how great I thought those David Burke technology history shows and the movie "Roger and Me" was.
After a year of production classes (and the NPPA TV News Storyteling workshop) I wound up working instead in event video and, eventually, as a shooter/editor for business school marketing communications office for a few years doing a several mini-doc, promo, and testimonial type pieces, some with a former PBS producer.
I've been freelancing since June 2010 doing some shooting and editing, a little grip work, and a lot of (video and web) software training. I also was one of the volunteer editors who put together those daily packages on the SilverDocs 2011 youtube channel during the festival.
The most "doc" things I've done are that I put together a short piece on youtube called "Athar the Bike-Man" about a guy who manages his OCD and other issues by riding his bike all over town every day. I also recorded a friend's team through three days of a 50-mile fundraising walk for MS and taped several concerts by a band I like.
I am interested in working on professional doc or advocacy projects with a social/political and/or technological focus. Aside from my production and post skills I'm a good researcher in those areas.
I've long been thinking about starting a project that follows several badly injured war vets through months of physical therapy and would appreciate any tips on how to get the military to permit extended taping in physical therapy and interviews with patients.
I have a decent Sony EX1 kit (six hours of cards, good wireless lav, good tripod, large+small battery, .8x wide adapter, zoom controller, 24" LCD monitor with component in) and will let others shoot using my gear as long as I'm around. I have a very reasonable day rate for DC.

I run a nonprofit called Art With Impact that works to directly link the power of film with opportunities for people to get engaged in social issues they care about. We are a new organization (just now entering our second year) and are learning a lot as we go. I look forward to learning from the filmmakers on this list how we can best serve independent film makers, and get their work out to interested/engaged folks around the U.S.!

My name is Maysam Akbarin. I am a Software Engineer based in Alabama. I have done close to nothing in this field( actually nothing ! ) .
However, I have some ideas for a documentary. But before I do anything I want to start learning about how to make one first then see how things goes from there.

Even though some took place years ago, they're still quite relevant. And it's like having a mini-tutorial on documentary producing and practices.
I joined because I was on a desperate search for your movie "Home Page". I watched it in class led by Professor Peggy Vail at Columbia University a couple years back (and you visited as well!) – I was completely awestruck. I had forgotten what the internet used to be like, (or did not realize, at the time, that the advent of the world wide web used to be populated with such strange and "new" things) in the 90s.
And now, I want to watch the movie again, somehow, but there doesn't seem to be any place selling, renting, or streaming the movie.
If you know where I could get a hold of a copy, please let me know!

True, but sometimes you need to know the past to understand the present. Also, I just really enjoyed your movie, that's all! Hopefully it will be digitally released – let me know when it does. I'll be jumping on it.

Hello All, I am a doc film producer and made 3 films a few years ago, one that I had commercially picked up (it dealt with terrorism). While I had no professional (publicist) help, I managed to get into a few film festivals, but really found the "public eye" through the news/media, who wanted to use my footage...which I gave them freely of course. This said, I have joined some friends in post production of their film, which deals with the Middle East but a past snapshot in history...dealing with a peace treaty/Carter Admin. I have been working on getting us into film fests – NOT for the sake of winning prizes, but simply for getting "seen"...I know the "big mainstream" ones, a few which we have already been accepted to, but I was hoping to hear from ANY of you in this Forum about some other "more obscure" ones. Can anyone tell me about the Maine Int'l Film Fest and the Pittsburgh Independent Film Fest? Thanks!

I just completed my first doc called Casting By which is about the range of influence that casting has had on film history. I have a few questions about how to sequence our credits for the locked cut..is there a 'standard' as to the placement of Director, Producer etc cards or is it entirely up to us? Thanks!
