Bio
Ryan Simmons is a filmmaker, media designer, and scholar with a passion for documentary storytelling that explores the complexities of human experience. Holding an MFA in Documentary Film from Wake Forest University, his work delves into themes of mental health, social justice, and the intersection of personal narrative and larger societal issues.
His thesis film, Reel Conversations, is an intimate exploration of mental illness, using candid dialogue and poetic visuals to foster understanding and connection. With a background in both film production and media education, Ryan is committed to using storytelling as a tool for impact, whether through independent documentaries, scholarly research, or media-driven advocacy.
In addition to filmmaking, Ryan works as a media designer in higher education, helping to craft engaging digital narratives. He is also an active researcher in documentary film and activism, exploring the power of media to shape public discourse.
Ryan is currently developing new projects that challenge traditional narratives, experimenting with form, and continuing his research on documentary viewership and its role in shaping contemporary perspectives.
